Hi all,

So, my current car (05 Yaris) is on its last legs.

I drive roughly 50 miles per day – but spend quite a lot of time in my car.

I’m in the market for something to replace my Yaris.

I would ideally like to spend roughly £10,000 – but if there’s a compelling reason why I ought to buy a new car (on finance) then I’m happy to up my budget to £~300 per month.

Could anybody perhaps recommend cars I should be looking at for £10k? As new as possible, if you don’t mind!

Sorry - I’m a total car noob and don’t really know where to begin!

Thanks a million!

If your only requirement is to be as new as possible, then a brand new VW up! and quite a few very small cars can be had for under £10k. You must have more requirements surely?

Do you want a car of similar dimensions or bigger?

If you want something slightly bigger you could check out the Ford Focus, or if you want a similar sized car then perhaps the Ford Fiesta.

Sorry, perhaps I didn't make myself clear! :o

I would like to spend £10k on a usedcar. I know that 10k doesn't buy much when buying new!

However, if 10k is not enough to get a decent used car then I would rather bite the bullet and just buy new...

I've been looking at 3 series / A3 / A4 to give an idea of what I like!

Sorry if not making sense!

(and thanks for helping so far! :-) )

You'd get a pretty new and well specced ford focus for 10k. I'd probably go for that.

You don't get much for 10k with Audi / BMW unless you're happy with a 6 year old car.

I pretty much agree with IvanDobskey.

You can get a good solid Ford Focus car for that price. Not as exciting as a BMW or Audi IMO but you get a newer car in choosing a focus.

Mazda 3 (petrol or diesel depending on requirements) in top spec Sportnav can both be had for £20k. They're available with 0% hire purchase if you have a 50% deposit. Really nice car.

So the consensus seems to be a nearly new Focus, rather than an older BMW/Audi?

I don't really have a checklist of things which I need in a car (economy, size, etc) - I just like the design of those cars I mentioned thus far! I suppose I would ideally like something bigger than a Yaris but it's not a limiting factor!

Great help so far guys, thanks!

Yeah the only reason I asked was because the BMW 3 series for instance has a large variation of engines and running costs from an M3 with lots of BHP and high running costs to smaller, more frugal diesel engines and everything inbetween.

Going to throw in a skoda octavia and a seat exeo as suggestions, although the focus will be just as good as either :).

Yep, get a well specced nearly new focus diesel. If you're doing a lot of miles then you want something bigger than a yaris, with good economy and low mileage.

You're far better off with a newer lower mileage focus than an older higher mileage BMW/Audi.

Another vote for a Focus here. If you want even bigger, don't shy away from the Mondeo; also an excellent car and you'd probably get a bit more kit over the Focus too.

50 miles a day 365 days a year is 18000 miles. You've assumed weekdays and I haven't.

But only OP knows if he meant 5 or 7 days a week.

Well you have to assume he is commuting to/from work. I doubt he works 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Aye, but he might drive around a little at the weekend too :)

As I said, I just made an assumption that could be wrong.

If it is 18,000 miles per year though, I'd get a diesel.
