Any more ideas for my new motor?

It is a Vauxhall people carrier. I don't care if it is rocket propelled, I don't want one! :p

Bora 1.8T's seem to be few and far between, but I'll look again. I had also looked at the 2.3 170PS. I'll run some quotes later. Will do a quote for a 4MO as well, but they are really rare.

I don't like Mercs, and the parts are costly.
That sounds like a decent price for a Range Rover, but I don't want one of those either.

I like your style. "Spec me a hatchback", so you first mention a people carrier, then a saloon, then another saloon, then a 4X4. :D

Indeed - typically OCUK i gather

To be fair, I would really suggest looking outside of hatchbacks - insurance on them with young drivers is not a good combo really - but look for oddball things and you'll see prices drop.

Its surprising when you start looking at those things - cars you don't always expect to be able to afford insurance wise etc are a lot more affordable then you expect.

Try Owners clubs as well - You may already be doing so but they are good hunting grounds.

And merc's aren't that expensive unless you stick to OEM stuff from the dealers - there are plenty of very very good spares out there, and you don't need the expensive dealer price for the same parts.

It all depends - you have a rough list of what you want but I would say don't think about body styles and size. I would add in road Tax, MPG, How long you want to keep this one for etc. What suits you know could be totally useless in 20 months, and thens its 5k for 20 months of fun.

Road tax, no more than £285
MPG, depends what the car is, but 30 combined would be nice. I might be able to settle for 25 combined.
I am really not sure how long I intend on keeping it. At least 2 years.

Ok so look pre the tax rise - think it was 05 ish before all decent big engine things got nerfed with £400 tax bracket

MPG like that should be easily do able - Even a RRS V8 will do that. That depends on how often you feel the need to press the loud pedal hard.

A couple of years I would shorten the budget then, keep some for running costs (service tax etc)

Maybe think 3.5k budget with 1.5k to cover running costs / intial purchase repeairs as such (For me its a full service (Plugs, filters, oil. a/c re gas and a valet/detail), new rubber and brakes - maybe suspension and bushing checks as well)

When you do a autotrader search I would say put your budget in (So say 3k to 3.5k), that you want a petrol car, How far your willing to travel and then just click search.

You might get a list of hundreds, but then if you want a set colour - red, blue, black etc, pick that and re search.

Then look through the resulting list and pick ones that jump out at you - its lot more fun and you always get some amazing results out of it that you'll never have thought of.

Almost like new car russian roulete with out the worry of being shot

Yes, I'd definitely suggest an E500 is the right choice for a 19 year old who has just written off a 65bhp Polo by driving it too hard :p

True - but give him some due he has held his hands up and said he made a mistake

I don't know of any other youngsters that would have done the same or come up with some daft excuse.

He's also doing the right thing to learn from his mistakes.

And while its daft to point it out, it was purely as a example of what his budget could get with that sort of money and to think outside the box

Though the kudos and the young skip rats, sorry girls, that would be intrested in a passenger ride would be massively more then currently

Have a look at larger saloons and estates for cheap insurance - A4 1.8T/Octavia estate is a decent shout to be and will give you lots of space for your LANs ;) A lot of my mates in the UK were able to insure fast Volvo estates for very reasonable money (mostly 850s/V70s) but V50 might be worth a look too.

Only problem with the Octy is I'll rub his balls up against a cheese grater until he lets me have a go with it.

Have you looked into the Suzuki Swift Sport? You can keep it for a year or two and sell it on quickly as they hold their prices quite well while gaining some experience of a faster car.

I went from 90BHP in my first car to 150BHP when I was 19 and it felt like a rocketship.

If you can crash 50bhp I can't imagine what you will do in something 4 times the power.

5k will get you a 5 year old Swift sport with less than 50k miles. 40mpg, cheap tax and peanuts to run.

My other half has the original Suzuki Ignis sport and it only has 115bhp (930kg kerb) but is full of character and a joy to drive. Just as much fun as my 300+ Celica.

Yea, thats kinda weird.

The Skoda obsession or the... Other thing?

Just found that something does need straightening, and it will cost labour on top of the parts... Suddenly my £1000 car might cost about £450 to fix.

Second thoughts kicking in... Dad is trying to accelerate the repairs prices and wants to drag me to a breakers tomorrow to pick up some stuff. He wont listen if I tell him I don't want to repair my car...

I may have to dig my heels in on this one while I think...

Without breaking it myself, what is the best way to get the most money out of a car with the damage I have described, which was worth £1000 pre-damage? Scrap is ridiculous, I'm not selling a car with an engine which is worth £250 alone for £100. Do breakers yards buy cars from private people?

They will indeed but for something so small and light you'll probably only get £100 from them for it, £150 if you're lucky. Call round a few and ask how much they'd give you for it, it's the only way to find out really.

Alternatively, whack it on ebay, no reserve starting at like £100 and see what happens, someone would likely buy it and either strip it for parts or fix it up themselves.

What is actually bent on it that's bumping up the repair costs, the chassis leg?
