Hi there guys,
Just got a 270x in my system and since putting it in I have been freezing and crashing when the card is under load.
The rest of my system is as follows
AMD FX-4300 CPU
4 HDD's
a CX500M PSU.

My initial thoughts are that the CX500M isn't giving my pc enough power ??
could that be correct or not?
Thanks in advance

i bought the psu less than a week ago,
rather annoyingly, thought i read somewhere that 500watts was enough...
and i dont think its heat because the pc turns off only after a few mins of operation and the temp dont every get much above 60*C

I get the same problem if i don't put enough volts in my CPU when overclocking, or with overclocking the GPU and not enough volts.

i'm also thinking possibly the PSU. my 12v doesn't seem to be what it once was, drops in GPU-Z from 11.75v to 11.50 with the GPU under load.

FX-8350 @ 4.6Ghz
R9 290P @ 1040/1350 stock and 1100/1407 24/7 overclock.

PSU: XFX Pro 750 (2 years old)

What happens if you put your old GPU back in ??

What's your full system spec ?

Could be PSU, but then he isn't using a great deal of hardware either..

CPU is rated for 95W but could use a lil more, 270x 500w recommend, the test system in this review pulls 267W under full load (Crysis 3) http://www.anandtech.com/show/7503/the-amd-radeon-r9-270x-270-review-feat-asus-his/16

Have you got lot's of case fans? Optical drives? Plus 4 HDD's.. I would say it's worth picking up a 750w PSU, get a decent brand and test it again, send your other PSU back if it's only a week old, say it isn't fit for your needs or let them know the PC isn't working under load and you think it's the PSU.

Better to have the extra W headroom on the PSU if you need it. When it doesn't need it it's not gonna use anymore power, so sometimes it's better to have a bit more W than you need in case you wanna try big overclocks etc..

There are few reasons why PC hangs up: no proper voltage, overheating - and each one might be caused by another reasons :) You didn't mention motherboard model, and this might be a reason - for example, if this mobo is not designed for FX CPUs and doesn't have proper cooling at power section. Overheating doesn't regard to CPU only.

Would dropping 25mv off the 12v rail while under load be an indication of anything?

I cannot test the old GPU as I am now at uni... however before the new card was swapped in this was not happening, so i do believe that it is down to the GPU.
I will try booting the system without the GPU in there and hope for better results.
also for those that would like to know, my mobo is a gigabyte ga-78lmt-usb3.

Thanks

could the problem be that I havent set up the card correctly?
It uses 2 different 6 pin sockets and both are comming off of the same cable (rail?) on the PSU.
should I be using 2 separate "rails" to run this card or should this config be ok?

Yes.

i think we may have found the problem ....
can i just buy one of corsairs modular 6 pin cables from somewhere then?

Ok, so what I have done now is run one of the 2 GPU power inputs from sata, using a strange bundle of wires that goes from sata power -> molex power -> pcie. however my hard still seems to be freezing, is this because I cant pull much power from sata? or should this now be working?

To rule out the PSU what i would do is undervolt and underclock the GPU

In MSI AB set the GPU to 600Mhz unlock volts set to about 1v or -200mv depending how it reads it.

This to reduce the power consumption of the GPU so it not so hard on the PSU

Have just tried to enable voltage control, but I am not sure if my card is supported.
I have tried it on reference, msi and exteneded and it has not enabled th voltage control option for me.
the only thing I am able to do is set the power limit (and the clock speed and memory speed)

EDIT: I have also tried enabling unofficial overclocking mode

Trixx worked, just ran the furmark burn in test with no problems at all, which the pc would have crashed whilst doing before.
could the problem be i am trying to draw too much power off the sata power connections?
i read somewhere that they cannot deliver as much as molex?
