Hi guys,

Been a fair few releases and price changes recently so need some input.

Got a nice pay day coming this month so already getting an itch and was thinking of selling my 7950 and getting either 780Ti or a 970.

I play at 1080p 120Hz

I don't think I'm quite ready to get rid of the 920 as for some reason is still doesn't really bottleneck which is bloody impressive as its 5 years old now!

Which out of the 780Ti and the 970 would you recommend?

OR do I just get a 280x and crossfire it with my 7950?

Cheers

You can always throw a 6 core Xeon 5650 in your rig. They're selling for £59 atm. Depends on your board, but would be a very nice upgrade for cheaps.

780ti or 970? they're both the same IMO. 780ti is better at 4k but has less vram, 970 better at lower res more vram.

Do they drop in an X58? are they overclockable?

Yup and yup.

Clocked up they're around as fast as a 4770k/4790k at comparative clocks. A snip for £59.

I would check your board, but unless it's a DFI or something gnarly like a Foxconn it should definitely work given they're pretty much a 980x with a second QPI.

ASUS Rampage II Extreme, LGA 1366/Socket B?

or

Asus P6T deluxe Rev 1.02, LGA 1366/Socket B?

Yeah I've got the Giga UD3 - cheeky that. Never knew they were over lockable! Very cheeky, performance for gaming is just as good I assume or better?

Ok so it's probably better saving a few quid and getting the 970. The MSI is proving popular- correct?

EDIT: just seen above post. Ok I'll probably get the 780Ti then. Crazy how much cheaper nvidia dropped them. How much were they on release?

UD3 is absolutely fine. They overclock via the FSB, and your board is known to do 200 easy.

Performance is better than what you have now, as Westmere like Gulftown had a better IPC than the chips before them. They're also better at overclocking due to running cooler. Your I7 920 is 45nm, the Westmere 5650 is 32nm.

It's kinda like going from Sandy to Ivy. There was a small IPC gain etc.

You can pretty much expect 4ghz with your eyes closed, higher clocks being easily possible. The 'norm' I would say is 4.2-4.4ghz providing you have a good cooler.

970

I can't do ultra at 1080p on my 780 ti cards due to the vram. I can stick everything else on it's highest setting but ultra textures. Obviously this is with the hd pack installed. The frame rate is fine but it stutters like mental due to the vram being breached.

Already 'clocked' some at the dock of the bay

Cool. There's one seller who seems to have a metric tonne of them, and also is good about RMA should you need it.
