Llooll Aammaazzoonn!

From my memory you only saw her legs... with the occasional broom. She spoke like a black person (voice actor was black) and she did maid stuff.

Yup, racist.

EDIT: Did it cross anyones mind, before this thread, that T&J was at all racist?

No it didn't

Probably because my mind is that way
It's like that Southpark episode where the kids don't even see the black person being hanged as racism because they don't see him as different to the white characters on the sign

Didn't you read the thread? spoffle reckons it's not about black people or something and then got butthurt and then I forget because I don't care.

....Nevermind

Well you obviously don't quite get what butthurt means, but then that's hardly a surprise.

I thought you were out, anyway?

OH LAWDY LORD this thread is still happening

No one have mentioned the blackface effect yet on this thread. That's when a bomb blows up in Jerry's face, covering it in soot. Was that seen as racist too or was it entirely to do with Mammy Two Shoes (the maid)? When it comes to censorship, I personally think that editing out the smoking scenes in Tom & Jerry is worse. Ok, smoking is a lifestyle choice that can sheer 5-10 years off your life, but so can alcohol, chocolate, pasties and Playstations lol. The censoring out of smoking scenes just smacks of nanny state.

I did Post 97.

Must admit when I watched the cartoon as a child I didn't know black people existed, I just thought they ran out of cream coloured watercolour for the slides. :p

not gonna lie, watching tom and jerry is probably responsible for my current penchant for book burnings and big white hats....

or i could be a normal person who wonders who even noticed that?

So as a child, you were aware of such sterotypes, racial issues and the like..

Behave yourself.

I was, but then I grew up during Apartheid era SA.

That said, I had always assumed her to be the lady of the house too, not a maid.

I think part of the problem is that the goalposts change all the time. E.g. in English class back in the early 1990s, we had to say "coloured people". Apparently, that's no longer PC and we have to say black people.

I keep hearing people say African American…

In some parts of the world having a maid is still common. At some point the american culture decided that it is racist to have a maid? I was not aware.

No, not at all.

Having a maid who is paid a salary is perfectly common. Having a black slave who is forced to serve you is immoral, Illegal, and thankfully in the west now uncommon.

Will the PC ever stop!

It looks very unlikely for the foreseeable, but it doesn't mean you have to let them take away your powers of discretion. All of the supposed changes that have been emerging since god knows when haven't really affected me, as I can still say what I want with my friends and family - which is what really matters. :)

I always just thought of her as Tom's owner. I actually thought she owned the house she was in.

As a kid, the only thing I loved and remember was them chasing each other around.

What's all this rubbish about a black slave worker lol!!

Rubbish, my kids will be watching it.

With the exception of feature-length films (Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks), you can give me Tom & Jerry and Road Runner etc over modern stuff any day!

P.S. if you like slapstick like T&J, give Lilo & Stitch a viewing, as that's a fairly modern feature-length film that has similar humour.
Coloured has never made sense at all, is your skin devoid of colour?

Do things become false because you disagree with them?

Why is it rubbish exactly? That's what the character was based on. Do you mean to say that you don't care? If you don't care that's fair enough. I don't care myself, I have merely stated how the character is portrayed and what she is based on and that I can understand why they felt the need to add a disclaimer.

As I've said, I'd rather a disclaimer than it be censored, edited or scrapped all together.

Maybe you should have read he thread properly before commenting on posts you've either just skimmed, or not understood.

I also presume you mean to say that you wont stop your kids from watching it, rather than explicitly stating they they will be watching it?
