With increased competition from NVIDIA and no new GPUs to launch, AMD is cutting the prices of its Radeon R9 290, and 290X GPUs (NYSE:AMD, NASDAQ:NVDA)

NVIDIA has launched its new Maxwell GPUs, with the new GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 taking the world by storm, but what has AMD got? No new GPUs for now, but the company is now slashing the prices of its current Radeon R9 290 and R9 290X GPUs, considerably

The Radeon R9 290 has dropped from its $399 price to $299, while its more powerful brother, the R9 290X drops from $549 to $399, a drop of $150. The R9 285 has also dropped to $229 or so, while the 280X is down to around $269. The new price cuts are effective immediately

For anyone thinking of going crossfire with 290 or 290x. Now is the best time! As if buying a 2nd hand 290 was cheap enough already.

Good find, this will keep AMD in the running till new line up is around. I very doubt Nvidia will slash its prices any lower than they already are.

290 now becomes once again the go to GPU for Price/performance.

Makes no sense, 290 at $300 or a 280x at $270, making the 280x dead stock outside of crossfire users.

Ah well, so 290 down to around £200-220? Not bad at all, they can't have much of a profit margin left on these now though.

I would say the 290 needs to drop a lot more as the price is still very close to the far better GTX 970..
I say the r290 needs to drop to $249

R290 $299
GTX 970 $329

that means that the R290 is only going be about £20 cheaper..

Wouldn't say much better after these Benchmarks lately.. The only thing a 970 got over 290 is less power and even that is saving you not much a year at all.

It takes a 970 @1.5ghz I believe to beat a 1.2ghz 290

Power consumption isn't just about 'energy saving' it also means the chips efficient and runs cooler/doesn't require such an aggressive profile to keep it (assuming all things, cooler etc are equal)

Full DX12 support.

I remember lots of, why would you buy old gen hardware from some vocal AMD owners not that long ago. Surely the same argument can be made here.

Sounds good but how much will that bring the 290 down to in the UK?

If it's over £220 it still seems like it would be worth getting a 970
