Hi there, my grandad has recently been offered an amount for this:

He has told me its a "Great Western Railway Tank 240, 5" Gauge"

now me and my mom have a feeling this person is trying to rip him off, as he keeps increasing his price by considerable amounts.

Im looking for any information or somebody that knows where I can call/contact to get a rough price. He says the only thing wrong with it is the boiler needs fixing.

Thank you in advance for any help

I wouldn't have the foggiest by my word is that a lovely model. That'd be a heirloom in my house.

He is only getting rid because he only has become very ill. The guy offered him £1000, then came back and offered £1500. So something seems amiss would you not agree?

There's going to be atleast a few hundred pounds there, at least.

Maybe in scrap value, you're probably looking at thousands assuming it's in working order. I remember seeing kits for 3 1/2" gauge locomotives going for quite a lot of money.

Have it valued by someone more in the know or at the very least look online for people with more specialist knowledge.

Edit - just seen the bit about the boiler, I suppose it depends on exactly what needs doing, if it's a new boiler it will probably be a costly fix.

Sounds dodgy. Hope your granddad gets better.

Holy crap knew it'd be worth a lot but that's amazing

Ill give that place Origin suggested a call tomorrow, its definitely something that is going to need a specialist's evaluation. If anyone knows of anywhere else that may be worth calling that would be much appreciated!

People who collect this kind of stuff will pay silly money, I don't know anything about that kind of stuff but it looks like quite a piece, the main concern really is making sure (a) its valued (b) paid for properly via a non-scammy method.

(Purely judging by the other stuff on sale that potentially about £1900 worth to the right buyer).

Watch the video in the eBay ad linked above if you haven't already. Last time I grinned like that must've been when I saw my first fire truck!

You are definitely right, thanks for all the advice guys!

You class a buyers first low-ball bid as dodgy? It's fairly standard.

Yes but as you've seen it's probably worth a fair whack more than that, with a riding car going for nearly a grand it wouldn't be silly to say it could be worth something closer to what the others are going for and 1.5k is a lot less than that.

The broken boiler is estimated at £100-£300 fix according to my grandad, im guessing that it doesn't need to be replaced, he did know a lot about these engines at the time. But I don't have a clue tbh
