My wisdom teeth have started coming through and I'm dreading going to the dentists so much it's unhealthy :(. I mean to the extent of heart pounding, lightheaded, nausea kinda fear.

I think it all stemmed from an orthodontist who managed to put a piece of brace wire through my cheek . Other than that I've never had a bad experience so I don't know why I'm being such a pussy :(.

Does anyone else suffer from an irrational phobia of dentists(well dental work)?

Anyone conquered their fear of dentists? Any advice?

No, I don't have any irrational fears.

Why do you need to go to the dentist just because you're getting your wisdom teeth through though? Mine have started to come through and the thought never crossed my mind.

I was 'mistreated' by school dentists as a child and never went to one for 25 years. back in those those days they got paid to do repairs not preventative work. Eventually I had to return to one and was surprised how much better they are. Ring up a dental surgery and explain your situation, most dental practices now have someone specializing in nervous patients.

Andi.

It depends on the angle at which they're growing through.

It's on its way to causing an abscess in my cheek where it's rubbing.

Also stupidly they causing bunching/ crookedness of my other teeth from my fear of going to get it sorted sooner. Pretty sure they're growing forward .

It's my only fear that I know of :(.

All four of my wisdom teeth are impacted and when the dentist says:

D: You've got some serious teeth there!
Me: Serious good or serious bad?
D: Bad...

I suddenly don't want to be there.

It was when I was referred to the hospital that I decided to wuss out and stopped going to the dentist all together for about 15 years. Eventually I just had to suck it up and go back but so far all is well wisdom wise...

On the plus side, I've got all my own teeth and not one filling, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

Because most peoples don't come through cleanly. If yours have only started to come through, they haven't gotten near the point of causing problems. Mine started coming in when I was in my early 20s. It wasn't until my late 20s they started causing problems. I needed a back molar removed because the wisdom tooth had started to compress and crack it. My top left wisdom tooth is growing out sideways and I have to go to the dentist next month to see what to do with it.

Only people with big mouths have space for all those extra teeth to come in and have them come in cleanly.

my OH suffers from panic attacks at the dentist. she has to pop a diazepam to get her there and then if any work needs doing they have to sedate her.

all highly amusing from where i sit but then i haven't been to a dentist for yonks.

My mum used to be like that when I was a child. I found it hilarious watching her get scared of nothing. Now I understand :( (even though I know it's nothing to be scared off ).

Cheers cosimo :D.

I had my bottom two wisdom teeth growing under the gums towards the front of my mouth, so pushing all the others out of place.

Only because of bad aches occasionally I got in checked out before too much damage was done.

Was put under general anesthetic and had them both removed. Only painful bit was waking up looking like a hamster for a couple days after. My teeth straightened out pretty quickly after and I didn't even need a brace.

Nothing to fear OP. Even if you have something similar to what I did.

If your wisdom teeth are anything like my wife's your fear of the dentist is irrelevant.
It's whether or not you have a fear of surgery at the hospital and general anaesthetic.:p

No need to thank me.

Honestly I think I'd prefer a general rather than local. I don't think I get a choice though :(.

I've got no issues with surgery if this one requires it it will be my 3rd surgery.

However reading up the risks of nerve damage are increased under general .

Absolutely no worries I won't thank you :D.

My wife hates the dentist, she had a terrible time growing up with dentists. Her enamel was ground off on her front teeth, they tried removing wisdom teeth but just snapped them off then filled the roots and the back four teeth on all four sides are just one mass filling front to back.

It's taken ten years to get her teeth to any sort of normality.

Holy ****!:eek::eek: Again, a fairly understandable reason to dislike the dentist... :/

In my experience there is no such thing as an irrational fear of dentists, it's all totally rational.

Dentists and vets, I don't trust 'em!
