Do you class swearing as the norm?

In my experience of working in retail (I don't do customer servant), swearing is the only language some customers understand (they don't like it but they listen and suddenly get a good understanding of the English language).

No. It really pees me off as it shows a considerable lack of control and intelligence.

Bull ;)

Pop onto Youtube and look up "Stephen Fry talks about the Joys of Swearing", can't link here due to swearing :D

That's just pretentious horse **** to be honest. Just because someone swears does not mean they lack intelligence. Sometimes only a "go **** yourself" will suffice in getting your point across. Instead of the pseudo intellectual war of words that does nothing but go in circles, achieve nothing, except make wordy people feel better about themselves or superior to others.

****in' this.

Swearing has its place.

Surely it's all about context? Would I swear at a patient at work? Of course not, it would be unprofessional and I'd expect to get disciplined. Nor would I swear in a restaurant on a date, or where there were kids a outs. However, I've no problem swearing like a trooper down the pub with my friends....

Unfortunately it is simply far too ****ing common nowadays.
Some people treat it as normal language and simply cannot fathom that they are swearing in such an abundant ****ing manner.

You should try working on a super market shop floor and having to deal with some 'customer' who's only come in to waste their own time by wasting everybody elses.

There's nothing objectively bad about swearing, only subjective. Why would it reflect intelligence in an objective way? And if so, how is it related to intelligence? I dont know, care to explain?

At home, not so much. At work, pretty much every other word depending on who I'm talking to. Military innit.

I feel bad when I swear. At home it is not done at all, and in work it is also unacceptable.

I try to only let one out when I'm super, super annoyed. Otherwise it's just common and demonstrates bad self control or poor upbringing. Or you're a builder, and therefore exempt ;)

No.

I take it Stephen Fry lacks control and intelligence then?

The telling question is this:

Would you swear around your children, and would you let them swear in front of other people?

If you can honestly answer, "Yes, that would be fine," then you don't consider swearing a bad thing. If the answer is "no" for any reason, then you do at least subconsciously consider swearing wrong.

This idea can be applied to so much... (That clearly isnt wrong)

Another telling question would be whether or not Steven Fry would consider it appropriate/intelligent to swear in front of children etc?

No women aren't fragile jkb is just a well mannered person. Some would say old fashioned but I don't see anything wrong with that. Wish more people behaved that way.

Why single woman out as specifically needing to be protected from swearing though?

Surely well mannered is not swearing in public at all....

TBH I think it's got to do with how you were brought up.. If your family and friends were doing it, you would learn it no matter what. Programs you watched on TV, all the better ones had swearing (intelligent programs too), so you would be used to it and subconsciously learn from it and swear. Unless you're brought up in the posh (we are better than everyone else) lifestyle, you WILL swear instinctually as the words have become a norm for us all (movies, certain sitcoms, magazines, social networks), apart from private school rich cocky rich a-holes who would NEVER do what the peasants do.
But intelligence comes when you know not to swear, I.E. a job interview. You can be swearing all your life, as I do thanks to South park, but deciding on when it can be right or wrong, will show what kind of intelligence you have. Swearing does NOT mean you belong on benefit street, or scum of the universe, or be institutionalised in a 'special' school, because admit it, they are really just words used everywhere these days, that honestly you will never escape from. Comparing it to intelligence means you are a posh high o mighty prestige perfect human being who thinks every other is scum below them..

TL:;DR Comparing swearing to intelligence means you are Hitler re-incarnated
