I have a 7970 and keep getting the upgrade bug, I've always fancied crossfire but I'm not convinced its worth the hastle. So what would you do with approx £100, second hand is not a problem.
I'm thinking get a 7950/7970/280x or sell it and get a 290/x or maybe a 780?
Any thoughts?

cant the 7970 cope? im in the same boat as you,all these new gpu's is tempting me but tbh my 7970 copes just fine

I had 7970 crossfire and it worked very well, if you need a bit more grunt then you wont go far wrong with adding another if you can pick one up cheap enough

If you sell your 7970 you should have enough for a R9 290/290X or GTX 780, either will be a nice upgrade of about 30 - 35% in terms of power from what I've read.

I just swapped my 7950 running at 7970 speeds level speeds for an R9 290, and any dips in FPS had in my games before has been eliminated it's all nice and smooth now.

To be honest it seems to run fine. But thought I might notice some difference with an upgrade. I think it's more of a bug to be honest as I'm seeing all these cheap cards coming up

its hard, trouble with xfire is the heat

idk when the next amd cards are due, probably wait till then,i also like the gtx 970's

In same boat, want something new but my 7970 is doing ok. I might wait for more 4k monitors and buy something then. I could buy my brother's 780 but is it enough increase... I could buy a 970, but do I need too...

Surely the thing to do is wait if you're not having any major problems? No single card can do 4k at the moment and 4k screen prices will decrease soon I'm sure.

Wait for next cards or get a cheap second 7970/280(x) off the mm if there are any going for cheap

Yeah I'm hoping the next gen will be a nice increase, just keep getting the urge, especially when I keep seeing cheap 290's.

You say no single card can do 4k, but there's a 4k benchmark thread with single card scores....?

Those are very low framerates. Just because it works doesn't mean it works well enough. Dual GPU has very low framerates too. Kinda the point of Futuremark benches though, eventually graphics hardware will catch up.

Going with no as 4 980s is needed according to results to get decent fps.

Might as well hold onto my 7970 till better cards come out.

Haha, I know what you mean, may have indulged in a couple of 980s the other day :D

Seriously though, unless you're going to go all out with multiple cards, id wait until next series of cards come out. And get a second 280/7970 in the mean time :D

Pretty sure you could easily oc the 7950 to 7970 levels tbh. Not sure what the exact clock speed difference is between them off the top of my head though. They are definitely x-fire compatible though
