Ebola scaremongering?

Considering it was scoring 90% as recently as 2003 I would say this is a testament to medical progress :)

Not really it's just because developed nations are now taking an interest and actually pouring money into getting equipment and expertise over there, whereas normally it's just left to run it's course.

Okay, this is what i don't understand.

If the virus is only transmitted through bodily fluids or as some people here suggest - going through their crap...

then how did that man in Dallas died?

Do we know how Duncan was infected?

It is believed he came into contact with Marthalene Williams, a young Ebola-infected woman in Liberia on 15 September, according to a report by the New York Times.

Duncan is said to have helped take her to hospital, but she was later turned away due to lack of space in the Ebola treatment ward. He helped to carry her home, where she died hours later.

If all he did was carried her? They only had skin to skin contact. Which suggests her sweat is contagious and by simply touching her skin and then eating without washing your hands is enough to catch it? or did he have cuts in his hands?

And the nurses that cared for him in the US also got it, or did they have cuts in their hands too?

Was she bleeding? Did she cough on him(while not airbourne as such it can transmit short distances through mucus droplets iirc), did he get some of her saliva on him? Did he then rub his mouth/eyes/nose or have an open wound.

It's not difficult to understand how he caught it from her if he was that close to her and spent time carrying her.

Isnt there 7? stains of Ebola, with the Zaire strain being the most dangerous with 100% death rate and the others having less fatal results? Apparently they are named after the location of them being discovered.

For the past week I've been paranoid about shaking hands with people... especially ones of African descent who just had Liberian relatives stay over.

But I feel like I'm being racist if I refuse shake their hands.

You should never be made to feel racist in order to protect yourself

I just had to quote this again

As long as you don't go round sifting through people's **** and ****, be fairly hygienic and don't go touching and kissing dead people you should be fairly Ebola proof.

Clearly it is a lot more contageous than that, I am not going to start wearing face masks and gloves but I think treating this like your seasonal flu is underestimating this to put it bluntly.

He spent a probably considerable amount of time touching her while she was contagious, which is exactly what the advice says not to do if you suspect someone has it don't make physical contact with them.

It can be transmitted by sweat but far lower risk. Also if she was sick enough to be carried there could be vomit, poop, blood, sores etc.

To many on here are underestimating it and to much media is over estimating it.

WHO are giving predicted range values, and as they said it could easily be lower or higher. Now they have more data they've upped the 50% fatality rate to 70%.

The good thing is it's not the most contagious however this goes out the window once you get enough people infected to not be able to isolate, which is what is currently happening.

Am I worried no, but unlike flu and other scaremongering, this is far more real. This isn't reliant on some scientist saying it may mutate etc. It's contagious with a high fatality rate.

Sweat is a bodily fluid Raymond, simple as that. All he then has to do is pick food out of his teeth with his nail or wipe is eye, and that's that. But, that's true of even the common cold or flu.

I know. I am comparing to say the HIV virus where it cannot survive in oxygen, so although it can be transmitted with needle exchange but I don't think you can catch that by shaking hands with a sweaty Palm.

Not to mention the much quicker infection to death timescale!

As said this is no HIV, it can be transmitted very easily, my fear is someone is sick on the tube hold on to the bar, gets off one stop and i get on and hold the same bar, sweat should be more than enough to get transmitted
