Info on Paris please

Grab a bacon and cheese burger at Studio 5.

Hmm, going to Paris and ordering an American culinary dish - maybe not the best way to enjoy France :)

In Paris, none of the locals will speak English until you utter the magic words "Je suis Ecosse!"

Thanks for the advice (those who actually gave it) Its actually a surprise 30th so Paris is what she would like.

I've always found the complete opposite everywhere in France. I live there at the moment, and speak decent French, but as soon as people hear an English accent they're absolutely desperate to show off their English. My local shopkeeper completely refuses to speak to me in French and delays me every morning constantly talking to me in English. :p

Parisians are far less rude than Londoners even when your drunk shouting shouting terrible frenglish in a North East accent

Probably the most expensive place ever though. Nice but expensive

We went a few months ago, def go to the Eiffel tower at night.

We stayed about 200m from the the Eiffel tower and had a view of it from our window, we stopped 4 nights and with flights it cost £700.

You will need a bit of spends as it is a bit more expensive than most places.

Go see a show at the crazy horse, you get to see a lot of lovely women topless with your wife and some champers. We enjoyed it.

We went there for valentines day (weekend) years ago and other than one restaraunt being good it was among our least memorable holidays. It really isn't anything special.

Couple of touristy food suggestions:

Breakfast: Coquelicot in Montmatre - have a baguette and croissant and a big bowl of tea/coffee/hot chocolate

Lunch: grab a falafel in le Marais

Dinner: Josephine "Chez Dumonet for the duck confit - book ahead :) or Relais de Venise for a good old steak frites (if you haven't been to one of the branches in London already)

I like Paris, great place to go with your wife or girlfriend and a great city to walk around too in my book. As has been said £500 is not enough to sensibly enjoy Paris and frankly that should be a daily budget for hotel and food if you want to enjoy the finer aspects of Paris's restaurants.

Go somewhere else with a £500 budget.

Paris is nice but massively overpriced and you need to either spend a fortune, stay in a total hole, or stay a bit further out of town. There are numerous other wonderful cities in Europe where your £500 will go much further, £500 is not a particularly large budget if it includes everything.

Consider Berlin or Amsterdam.

This is true, we were there a couple of weeks ago (myself and my partner), we decided to stop there on our way back from Barcelona (We drove). We stayed out of the city in Bussy St Georges (2 stops from Eurodisney). It was a cheap place but satisfactory, (€38 a night), we stopped for 2 nights and bought 2 day tripper metro tickets which were i think €56 for 2 days for both of us.

One thing that we noticed immediately, and has been mentioned, there are some rough types about outside the centre, we were going through the turnstiles at the metro station and a guy had the audacity to share my space in the turnstile to get through without paying!

Paris is expensive inside zone 1, no doubt about it, i was paying about €16 for 2 drinks, we did the usual stuff (Eiffel tower etc), book online before you go, it's cheaper and you beat the queues.

We found prices a little better near Notre dam, there are lots of restaurants etc that offer 3 course meals for €18 ish (with supplements for better dishes), they didn't set the world on fire but they wre by no means bad either, i had frogs legs (had to try them), a rib eye steak and a creme brulee for €22.

I'll definitely be going back to Paris as 2 days was nowhere near enough. I definitely preferred Paris to Barcelona anyway.

Its a dump

You've obviously never been then. Paris is a beautiful city, the architecture is stunning wherever you look.

Most people I encountered were more than happy to speak English if you made an effort to ask them to do so in French.

I found exactly this too, i tried speaking in limited French (and got by), but if they didn't understand or i didn't understand them, they were more than happy to try and speak English too. I don't think i crossed anybody rude on my visit. I even got offered a job as a chef in a restaurant as the manager was great and we had some good banter.

Yes it is expensive.

It's a complete dump that could do with a good wash.

And again, i guess you've never been.

The tower by night is amazing, especially if it is the first time going as it was for us. We stayed in a cheap hotel on the outskirts. 2 adults and 2 kids and we drove there.

We had a tiny budget so we did not go to the Louvre or climb the Tower but just seeing it for the first time day and night was amazing. We walked around a lot and stopped of in a few street cafe's and bakery.

Be sure to climb to the top of the Arc de Triumphe.

The views are far better than the Eiffel Tower, but, be warned, it has a large number number of stairs.

You could take her on a Siene cruise. Set off in early evening and go down the river while they prepare dinner, looking at lots of fancy architecture, then eat dinner while the boat turns round and goes back up towards the Eiffel Tower. You get a splendid view of the tower and can see the light show on it, all from the comfort of the boat.

Lots of lovers walking hand in hand along the river in the evening and it all looks very romantic. You'd get to see the tower, other buildings and have a nice dinner all in one evening.

Might be a way of keeping your costs down? As mentioned prices in this place are absolutely crazy!
