Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Evolution arrived, really disappointed so sending it back. It's missing the clamp and dust bag and the thing is absolutely caked in dust and REALLY well used (despite the listing saying even C grades were cleaned etc). I'm also either being really stupid or the locking pin doesn't actually secure it down properly.

But yes that's the sliding b grade.

Also whether it's eBay's fault or theirs (they should put that info in the description really), none of that is stated on eBay mobile which was where I bought it from. All it says is this:

Admit it, you just dropped a ******* not getting the sliding saw :p

My 255 sliding came today, C grade. It looked pretty much brand new and came with all the bits apart from the box which isn't a problem. Gave it a quick test and probably now looks worst the the one you got russinating :D
 
Ha. This one was still covered in loads of sawdus and the disc is scratched to high heaven!

Also, am I being stupid? How do you lock the saw down so you can pick it up with the handle? Manual doesn't really say.

There is a metal pin that slides in to lock it in place.
 
Re: impact drivers and how good/powerful they are.

Try removing a 100mm screw that been wound in (without pilot drilling first) by an impact driver, by using a normal battery drill ;)

Well got the evolution sliding compound saw and falling some belt sanders and a router on ebay, do hopefully get them cheaper.

Looking for a biscuit jointer. Don't want to spend a lot but also needs to be accurate and not break like cheap power tools. Anyone got any experience?

Bit comparison - Bosch PBS Li 18V and the Bosch SDS 850W - iPhone 3GS video :D


I had to put the PBS on the floor for the hammer action - otherwise it doesn't engage (so I now have a small dent in the garage floor :)).

You can see the PBS sharp braking but not loosening - and you don't have to stop by braking every time.

The SDS can screw screws however it's a 2 handed drill. Drilled metal today with the SDS - fast where as on the other side I could not fit the SDS so I had to use the smaller PSB and the difference is quite marked. In wood there's less of a difference for small bits but for larger bits the SDS is faster.

I have the PST 650 E - the earlier version. Was using mine today intact. It was the very first tool I bought..

It works well - I have cut wood, aluminium and attempted to cut floor tile (even with a tungsten carbide bit it's not a good idea as be blade overheats). The blades are good, easy to change and widely available. You can set the maximum speed on the trigger.

The vacuum port fits the Numatic vacuum, so the henry hover works well. The only thing is the vacuum port takes the dust from the top but you still get dust dropping underneath.

There is a maximum size of thickness you can cut but that's just because any thicker and you'd probably looking at a different tool - bandsaw etc.

I see they did away with the only weak point of mine - the plastic guard that drops down gets dusted quickly and blocks the view. The newer ones don't have it and have a wire safety guard. What I would say is wear googles for chipboard/OSB board as any jigsaw is likely to throw shards. Ahh an if it takes after mine - ear defenders.
