Why does the Daily Mail exist?

Care to categorise the readership of British newspapers?

The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country;
The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country;
The Times is read by people who actually do run the country;
The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country and think Hitler was rather a nice chap [1].
The Financial Times is read by people who own the country;
The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country;
The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it already is.
The Sun is read by people who don’t care who runs the country, as long as she’s got big ****.
The Daily Sport is read by people who don't know what a country is. But they like ****!
The Star is read by people who think that everyone should run their own country, with girls with BIG ****!
The Express is read by people who hate their country, everybody else's country and themselves, and everything in general.
The Independent is read by people who own the newspapers.

erm because it is awesome!

You don't need to buy it - they have a fantastic website... you don't need to read the stories either - just browse through and open a tab for each ridiculous headline you spot, scroll to the bottom and read the comments section - it is highly entertaining. Better still add to the comments and aim to accumulate either maximum up votes or maximum down votes.

Its tabloid trash, but then so is the Mirror, the Sun, Daily Star etc.

But those papers are red flag waving, Labour supporting rags. Funnily enough no-one complains about them. Well, the Sun in Liverpool maybe, but that was when it supported Maggie.

In short there is a political agenda which is out to try and if not silence it exactly, make it unacceptable to be seen reading it. Until presumably like the Sun it switches political allegience when suddenly it'll if not become acceptable exactly, it'll be ignored, politically speaking, like the others.

Seams to be one of thoes news sites that print thoes type of headline people like to share and click through to via Facebook.
The Daily Mail may just be on the same bandwagon, just taking in the advertising revenue every time some one clicks to read a "Story" sadly the more shocking or bizarre the headline, no matter what the content is after the teased first paragraph, the more traffic they get. £££ is the motivation.

Personally, I believe you're overthinking it. Politics changes everything for some, but all the people that I know dislike the Mail due to it simply making stuff up constantly.

This.

They are struggling to monetise the online side of things, despite being the most read news site. Sure they get the general ad revenue, but even that's rubbish, I'm on the thin side of skinny and get ads for Weightwatchers on there....

But the site is free to view, so i'm convinced the majority of people just go there to laugh at the terrible editing and proof reading, correct their factual errors in the comments or just laugh at the apoplectic ramblings of the loons who comment there. As soon as they charge for the service the readership will nose dive.

headlines like this one are worth browsing the site for from time to time:

"Kelly Brook's ex-Gladiator boyfriend pleads guilty to crashing van full of dead badgers into bus stop while working as driver in government cull"

Same reason as all the other Newspapers exist.
Many people like reading what they write so they give them money for it, they like money so they continue to write what they think the many people will pay money for.
All Newspapers are full of someone else's opinion, in this day and age it's easy to find the facts on something that may interest you, Newspapers don't do that.

Thread closed as I don't think the OP really cares.
