This is to replace the stuff in my sons room. Some prices I've been quoted is unreal but had no idea what to go for. Want somerhing decent but not mega bucks as my kids will most likely wreck it

Sadly I learnt the hard way and bought from the carpet shop but I was advised on here to either go with cloud9 or wool underlay which was a fraction of the cost I paid for what I got.

When we had our carpet installed by John Lewis, they recommended the use of a 'crumb' underlay. So far it has been very good, but I don't have massive amounts of experience with other types!

Im a fan of the cloud9 gear, put some under an ageing carpet, Im talking probably around 25year plus. Gave the carpet a clean, looked brand new and felt fantastic.

That looks great, i need to redo my hallways and stairs.

Ive never done carpet before, and was looking to do the underlay myself to save some money before getting the carpet fitted.

A couple of questions suitable for this thread. Do you fit the same underlay to stairs? and is it best to keep it in largest sections as in having the hall all one piece ?

A good carpet fitter wont charge that much more for underlay plus they pick one that is going to match the carpet you choose so you wont run into any issues when fitting.

So many people think it's better to save few £ by doing it them selves really it's not worth it.

I was quoted £60 by one place and £130 by a different then price in between. I've played them all by giving different post codes but same room size.

I'd rather do it my self. £60 seams okay'ish as only £20 profit on it. However I'm doing me self

Vote for cloud9. Never heard of an underlay to match a carpet... The family member that fitted the carpet is a carpet fitter and mentioned nothing if the sort. He was happy I had layed it and stapled it.

I have Cloud 9 underlay, it is quite good but I must say I can still feel most of the lumps and bumps of my wooden planks through it.

Its like anything else the finish is only as good as the preparation.
If you can feel lumps and bumps through the carpet and underlay then they should have been dealt with before it was laid.

11MM's what I got, i'm not saying it's bad lol, but I can feel the floor through it, wasn't quite as good as I was expecting it to be. I'd only just moved into the place and there wasn't a carpet down at all, just bought the best reviewed one on Amazon
