Lord Tebbit: Unemployed youngsters should pull up roadside weeds for benefits

Well talk about taking an issue with more shades of grey than a horny housewive's novel and turning it into a black and white situation.

People not claiming benefits? No.

He didn't specifically say people claiming benefits, he said...

"There would be little cost to bring that under control if Neets and low level criminals were required as part of their contribution to the society which finances them, or which they have abused … to uproot this weed."

Given no man is an island I'd say society finances trustafarians.

We're going to need a lot of needles, but I broadly support your concept.

I'll bung 100K in if you join me, we can pay someone to inject the people....and then of course themselves. Might need to dig some holes too, so will need to hire a digger or some dynamite and some ear plugs.

I'd rather see a scheme where the people concerned were benefitting their local communities, making them a nicer place to live than private companies using them as unpaid labour.

So you'd happily see council workers who currently do this sacked then re-employed on a fraction of the wage as 'benefit earners'?

How about people take more care of their own communities out of pride rather than instilling an attitude that people can drop litter, spray graffiti and let their dogs foul the pavements knowing some guy on benefits will be frog marched out to clean up after them.

I'd be interested in seeing an analysis of the costs comparing the two to see if it's cheaper to have people on benefits perform certain tasks that the council currently undertake. If it is cheaper to use claimants for these sort of basic tasks then why not use them?

I agree but how is this any different to the current systems that instills the attitude that people can drop litter, spray graffiti and let their dogs foul the pavements knowing some guy on the council will be frog marched out to clean up after them?
