Commuters: Do you really 'listen' to your music?

For the last 4 or 5 years I've spent a lot of time commuting on trains and tubes, and always listen to music (as do 90% of people around me). Yet I often have no idea what I'm listening to. I do it more to just block out everyone around me so I can pretend I'm not crammed on a commute. Am I the only antisocial zombie or do others basically use music as ear plugs?

I definitely listen to mine, I also like to people watch as 80%+ of the carriage get lost in kindles and smart phones, whilst I enjoy my tunage and take in the world that they are missing.

Also not a day goes by that I don't perpetually love my shure 535s. They block out everything and allow me to hide in a bubble of music

Just put headphones on mainly to block out the other people but once in a while I'll get really caught up in a song and make a bit of a fool of myself :(

I used to have my head phones in, but pretty much just to drown out noise. I would read at the same time so my concentration was taken up with that. Made driving the bus right difficult though.

If I'm thinking whilst driving to work (commuting...) then I don't really listen to it.
But about 50% of the time end up car-dancing if electronic music, singing along if rock...

I always have my Shure's in. To quote someone earlier "not a day goes by that I don't perpetually love my shure" I've only got 315's though, I can't quite justify the upgrade to the more expensive models. That said I tend to phase in and out of listening to what's playing as I either also read or play a portable console.

Yep I do listen to mine but as they are mainly compilations of mainly Hardstyle I rarely know the performer.

Oh wow :D

I always listen to music when commuting on the peasant wagon. Blocks out the noise of the scrotes on the bus, plus I really like music.

I listen to speech based podcasts, so am generally concentrating on what I'm listening to.

I'm thinking of trying a few audiobooks as well.

I listen to music pretty much 24/7. So commuting is just a small amount of time I'm listening to music during the day.

I'm one of those that sings along when I'm driving :o

I do this too. I am a horrific singer. Don't care though. I just go nuts. Stuck in traffic playing the air drums and air guitar. Puts a smile on the faces of people rolling past.

I love my music. I have a cheapo pair of Sony headphones because I always lose the damn things but music is one thing which is sure to turn my frown upside down.

Cheapo sony headphones here too as I don't want to lose or damage expensive ones commuting everyday. Yes I listen to it. I also try to impress on my kids to actually listen to the words in songs rather than just the tune. A lot if stuff is mindless of course but some songs have quite profound wording.

I hear the voice as another instrument...

Only learned the lyrics to songs I've listened to for years as GF listens to words primarily.

Unless I concentrate / stop listening to the music itself - I don't pickup the words as a sentence, just as a note / other instrument.
