What is your favorite album of all time and why?

Mine has to be Linkin Park: Hybrid Theory

Why? Because i have listened to this album since its release in 2000 and never got bored of it. I listen to all kinds of music from Motown to Heavy metal but i can get bored of a very good album after a few weeks of listening to it. Hybrid Theory, i have never got bored of though.

Main reason for me making this thread... I want to see what other albums pop up in here so i can check them out.

Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds or Astral Weeks by Van Morrison.

Both albums my mum had on vinyl and as a kid I used to listen to all sorts of stuff she had on vinyl. But those two are two albums I've never lost interest in. Both albums I can put on and listen to the whole way through repeatedly.

I think the only artists I discovered myself, as opposed to being influenced by my mums collection, that I would say the same would be Sigur Ros or Bohren & Der Club Of Gore.

Ash - 1977 is probably the one I'd pick despite my preference for heavier music most of the time.

Best is pushing it a little though. Also how does one define best? :p

The Wall pretty much dwarfs everything else in terms of a concept album. I've never seen the 'story' set out well, so I feel obliged to try. The 'plot', very loosely based on the life of then-current Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters, goes something like this:

  • "Woo it's the rock album! Aren't you having fun?!! Isn't this great?!!? Well, my name is 'Pink' and I'm really super famous! But... it's not all as it seems -let's go back to the beginning...."
  • Pink's father is killed in the second world war (when Pink is a baby).
  • Pink is oppressed at school. Meanwhile, the lack of a father figure causes Pink to be smothered by his mother, which makes him weak.
  • The foundations of 'the Wall' that isolate him from others are put in place.
  • Adult Pink, now a bona-fide rock star, misses his wife, who he suspects is having an affair.
  • Frustrated and lonely, Pink goes on promiscuous jaunts of his own.
  • After discovering his wife is having an affair, Pink starts to unravel in his isolation and attacks a groupie.
  • All Pink's loneliness coverts into rage and anger. The Wall has been built and Pink's mental state starts to decay.
  • In the comfort of his self-absorbed isolation, Pink twists even further and starts to look for people to blame. Around this point, the plot starts delving into fantasy.
  • Pink uses his fame and concerts as a soap box, blaming all those different from him for the problems in his life (e.g. immigrants and other ethnic minorities). This leads to riots and violence against helpless victims. Pink basks in his glory.
  • Pink suddenly realises how much of an angry Tyrant he's become. Disgusted, he puts himself on trial within his own head.
  • At the trial, Pink's teacher and wife blame him for being useless (which is probably true). Pink's mum begs the judge to let him go some she can take him home to safety.
  • The Judge, disgusted at Pink's ridiculous narcissism and self-centered nature, announces that he has never seen anyone so deserving of punishment. He sentences Pink to be exposed for what he is in-front of everyone (hint: release the album) and orders him to tear down his wall (which then collapses).
  • The epilogue awkwardly laughs that bleeding hearts go through so much pain for nothing... but ominously points out that Pink is doomed to start this cycle all over again.

It's baffling, frequently out of chronological order and downright self-indulgent. But the music behind it is varied and startling. And somehow it works. Personally, I think the now discontinued live version (called "Is there anybody out there?") is even better.

All together now....

nope can't name just one, coz it'd just be what i'm into in this current year/years.

right now i'm having an eighties moment but is Nik Kershaw's - Human Racing, the best album of all time, nope but it's catchy :)

Wish You Were Here is great but i prefer Animals, Dogs is epic.

if forced at gunpoint i'd probably blurt out, Underworld - Second Toughest In The Infants.

oh and the why, coz i like it :p

There is never just one

Rage against the Machine - Rage against the Machine is one that springs to mind.

Keep them coming in.

I know it is hard to pick one. I have a few what could be up there, but i do get fed up of listening to them and end up putting them away for a year before listening to them again.

A few that come to mind:

St Anger
Definitely Maybe
Silver Side Up
Curtain Call / Recovery
Motowns Greatest Hits :p

Controversially, I think the use of keyboard on that album makes it sounds supremely dated.

That's fair enough. :)

Interestingly, the keyboards / synths are my favourite instruments on the album. :D

I love the last track (22:15); I intend that to be played at my funeral. :D

Talk Talk Spirit of Eden.

Nothing comes close for me... though Kate Bush's The Hounds of Love is up there, along with TT albums either side of Spirit... Colour of Spring and Laughing Stock.
