More Radeon R9 290X cards with 8GB RAM in november

That he is. Got to maintain my position at the top of all the 4K gaming benchmark threads here at OcuK somehow.

Not going to happen,

Something big, green and horrible is coming

And that is only my reflection in the mirror.

If the timing is right I may upgrade my 290Xs to 390Xs though.:D

I think I'm a bit behind the times... I'm at 5760x1200 60Hz and I was happy because I upgraded from 2GB VRAM to 3GB VRAM. :p

While I do think AMD is playing it smart aimming for an area which Nvidia is weakest on (4K res: not enough vram unless people have Titan, SLI scaling falls off badly for the 970/980 cards after 2 cards), I'm not sure if there are enough people gaming on 4K to turn their advantage into revenue...

Vast majority are still on 1920 res, and some on 2560 res.

yep the 4k market is small but a small market is better than no market plus with 8gb cards people may be tempted if they are planning a 4k maonitor in the future

The 4k market is a halo market.

The whole point of winning the high end card market is because it generates press and the enthusiasts buy them, rave about them, and when asked what gpu to buy by their friends/family are more likely to say nvidia/amd/whoever is winning.

This is a good move by AMD though, hopefully it inspires more competition and drives nvidia to release GM200 earlier.

Any company that aims for an area where there competitor is weaker to gain extra revenue is a smart move. It is one of the laws of business and if you do the same as your competitor it's a race to the bottom.

I guess it's down to the case of maybe many like OCUK approaching AIB partners and requasting some cards because there is a demand. The demand maybe small but so is the demand for Ferarris. But they stil make them.

The cost of those 8GB cards against a Titan is very keen and for those of us that are running 4k and it's a great idea and fills a gap in the market by slapping extra RAM on a current card.

Many people run dual cards today compared to a couple of years ago. The current choices for 4k are (and these wont nessesarily run 4k at max in every game)

4GB ;
X295 £600 (2x 290x's OC'd & factory included water cooling)
3 x 290's £6-700
2 x 290x £600
3 x 290x £900
2 x 980's £850
3 x 970's £775

> 4GB solutions
2 x Titans £1400+
Titan Z £1100+
2 x R9 290X 8GB £700+
3 x R9 290x 8GB £1050+

The 8GB cards are a very clever move and appealing for those that have taken on 4k. I'm not sure the 4k market is as small as people think. Running 1440p at 120 hz isn't going to be much different than the requirements for 4k at 60hz. Both require immense GPU horsepower. The market for 4k is smaller but so will the amount of 8GB cards produced.

Nothing like flogging a dead horse. It's a clever move though from AMD, they have brainwashed their customers so well that they know they will believe they need 8GB. You have to take your hat off to them for that.

Bit like you don't NEED DDR4....but you bought it.

Not really.

If you build a new PC on X99 or the upcoming mainstream Intel platform you have to buy DDR4 RAM as it is the only type of RAM which will work. It is just a periodical advancement in technology...
