Assuming I stick with a 1440p monitor, what kind of card am I gonna need to get to power it to run games reasonably?

I have no allegiences to AMD/Nvidia, I go with what's best at the time so I've had equal numbers of both cards.

And if I go crazy and get the LG 3440x1440 monitor. I take it I will need to get the most expensive powerful card just to run that thing. Which is kind of putting me off at this stage but it's pay day so anything can happen!

Hmm yes both linked Nvidia and AMD's look like well priced bargains at the moment.

Just getting up to speed on the subject seems that the 290's run hotter and potentially a little louder than the 780s which use less power and don't get as hot.

I think on the heat/power question I'd probably go with Nvidia at this stage.

Another 7950 for around £70 or maybe cheaper if your lucky.

The 970 is even more efficient, it uses about 70 Watts less than the 290.

There is no doubt that the 970 is a more efficient card, but the stories of heat and noise only apply to the Refrence blower coolers.

The 290's power consumption is around 230 Watts, the 970 is around 160 Watts, the 290 has around the same power consumption as a 7950 Boost, with AIB coolers they don't run hot or loud at all, i have a Powercolor PCS+ 290 which runs at 68c on a quiet fan profile.

The PCS+ is one of the best coolers, but the Sapphire Vapour-X is 'the' best next to the MSI Lightning.

It is cool and it is quiet, the card does not use a lot of power, its just more than the very efficient Maxwell, but it is cheaper with the Gold Reward wich in its self is worth a good chunk of money.

IMO its 6 or 2x 3 between them.
