Zoe Quinn: GamerGate must be condemned

Oh I wasn't saying it is justifiable in the slightest, I'm wholly against it. Not mentioning it in my post doesn't mean I agree with it, I was more making a comment about the feminists supporting her when she's done something that doesn't sound like it supports feminism at all. I don't know the timeline of events. I share the opinion of others that it isn't really of interest to me and the harassment and bullying should never happen, but she also shouldn't have acted like she'd done nothing wrong when she slept with 5 journalists for her own gain.

Thing is with that - surely it was more-wrong of the journalists to exchange good reviews/publicity for sex, since their job is to critique and report? Why does she get all the ****?

(this may have been covered many times over, I've not paid attention to the issue)

You're right. Both sides have done something wrong and they've both tarnished the industry with what they've done. But now this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion for all sides.

However there's no evidence that this has occurred. The original allegation about her sleeping with a kotaku journalist in exchange for favourable reviews has been proven to be false.

Neither side has done anything wrong because Zoe Quinns never slept with journalists in exchange for favourable reviews. Even the BBC article makes this clear.

GamerGate has nothing to do with ethics in journalism. It is an attempt by right-wing nut jobs like Adam Baldwin (who doesn't even play games) to harrass outspoken women.

Oh. What's happening then?

Actually.... I might just give it a miss.

Not true. It was denied by the Editor, but subsequently evidence emerged that they she and Grayson were socially involved whilst he was posting articles about her.

But as I said, GG isn't really about the Zoe Quinn incident. That might have been the spark, but nothing more. It was the reaction of the gaming press with the 'Gamers are dead' which really blew it up. To the point where it now has more than 3 million tweets and has been covered by the mainstream media and television shows.

Yeah, there were people writing favourable about other people they knew as well at Kotaku. Those named people didn't fight back though so everyone ignored them.

Yup, they should have said nothing and it would have all blown over. We've always known game journalism sucks, but slamming your audience as sexist just annoyed a lot of people.

I agree, it was the fact these sites went on the attack that caused this reaction. And the best thing is, the GG movement is actually winning despite all the mud that is being slung at them. This could perhaps a fight back in other industries plagued by similar narratives.

TotalBiscuit has a video discussion with someone from kotaku about game journalism ethics, posted yesterday. Is it about all this stuff?

I've no idea what is going on either. What confuses me the most though is that the Quinn lady is a feminist game dev against sexism and misogyny but gets her baps out on the internet?

See, one of the things people fear about feminism is that they won't get to see boobs any more. And then they complain when a feminist shows them some boobs.

No it doesn't. she definitely slept with (at one of) them - the article says that. It also says that no review was published. it does not state or even try to hint that she didnt sleep with the journos in return for favourable reviews. That has been speculation all along, of course, but the article does not dispute the speculation in any way .

That's not what I meant at all though. As a feminist I would have thought she would be against the casual objectification of women that posing nude or semi-nude online allows. It makes her less credible and a bit hypocritical to me that's all. Again though I've really no idea what this whole thing is about though so meh

That sounds an awful lot like she didn't sleep with journalists in exchange for favourable reviews - she slept with them for personal reasons.
