Help Spec ultimate gaming Build for 144hz 1440p

Well Hello everyone, It's been a while I havn't posted anything around here although my eyes have gone sore from all the reading.

I've recently sold my previous build and the itching for building a new one has come upon me, especially since it has been around 2 years since the last time I inserted a component into a case...

Now with all this Haswell-E, 4K, great TN monitors everything has somewhat confused me and I'm no longer able to say, Ha that's exactly what I want.

So here I am in desperate need for some OC uk wizardry!

All these builds are ''base builds'' and will have added watercooling and one or two extra graphics cards in the coming couple of months. (even if that means an extra 800£ - 1000£ for xmas)

The budget is whatever it needs

Intended use: Gaming plain and simple, SOM, BF4, Crysis 3, WoW, LoL, CS GO etc. I will also be purchasing a good quality set of 5.1 speakers and so the onboard soundcard might come into play even though it might go along with a PCI card.

Hopefully you might be able to shed some light as to a better choice of components and the pros and cons for a gaming rig of X99 vs Z97

I also really like the idea of building a white and black rig with the Asus X99 Deluxe / S in mind or Red + black with the Asus Formula VII's (armor looks quite sexy weather or not it will make much difference)

This is what I had in mind at the moment.

Not against going for a 970 GTX setup if that allows for improvement elsewhere.

I really wish to build the best base for future upgrades and found myself just confused with this whole X99 vs Z97.

Thank you for your help if anything comes up I'll make modifications asap :D

SLI 970's would be a better option than a single 980.
If it's just for gaming, an i7 Z97 build will be the better option to save money and barely lose any performance you would get from X99.

SP120's added for when you watercool, add another GTX 970 when you watercool and SLI them.

Interesting I have indeed started looking more into Z79 Although it's hard not to go for the latest, the cost doesn't seem to justify the difference in price, would a cheaper X99 board be worth a top end Z79?

As for the 970 vs 980 I'll need to look into gaming benchmarks etc It's quite important to me that I run 120+ fps on recent fps titles and not lose fps while in heavy raids on WoW considering this will be at 1440p I was expecting I might need the latest technologies.

Just as some extra info, I'm quite dead set on the 750D for it's watercooling capabilities and large window and I already have storage drives.

I'm purely looking for the main components.

Is there no EK waterblock for the GTX 970?

Would you guys be able to give me a hand completing this build I'm not sure about fittings and small bits I might be missing? I already have SSD's and any thoughts?

would be going for white coolent / tubing I wasn't entirely decided yet, with red sleeving.

Alright, To be honest I'll be building something new by the time the warranty would be out and I have a liking for Asus and it's EPU, the ram was more of an aesthetic touch I'm not a huge fan of the Teamgroup sticks just from a visual aspect, the other alternative would be to go black, white and a touch of blue but that would imply changing a few things around and not fitting with the screen even though I'm not a huge fan of the stand.

If I was to go X99 I would have to go for a cheaper Reference 980 GTX but the price difference wouldn't be that huge, might have to play around with a few components visually though... would this yield any benefit at all?

My only concern is not having 2x 16x lanes when the rig will go SLI... however much that would impact things, considering when the GTX980Ti will come out I might drop the GTX980 and buy two.

Silverstone vs bit-fenix cables?

Also is it possible to fit any AX radiators in the build? Either 360 or 240, would allow for a bundle.

Ok check out Gskill RAM selection then, there is some epic 2400MHz CAS9/10 stuff also listed.

What Kind of gaming performance and features increase would we be looking at with a

Rampage V Extreme + 5820K + DDR4
VS
Maximus VII + 4970K + DDR3

Dual 980 GTX OC

I don't find the price difference exceptional

I expect the Z97+i7 to be faster because the i7 4790K has nearly a 1GHz speed advantage over the 5820K and the extra threads of the 5820K compared to the 4790K wont count for anything in games.

The 4790K still has 8 threads.

Also since you've been away this deal has appeared - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18631511

Also Z97+i7 4790K uses DDR3 not 4, you got the two platforms mixed up.

Firstly, the 5820k takes DDR4 RAM and the 4790k takes DDR3.

Secondly the maximus motherboards arent the ones to go for, they are expensive for what they'll be used for and the gigabyte BK range beats in on value and (with the new 3 year UPGRADE warranty) upgradability. They are also stunning boards.

As for gaming the 4790k is still the better chip. The 6 slower cores are not a match for the 4 fast cores of the 4790k, not to mention it is (if you pick the correct parts) a good £100 cheaper and faster. Winner, right?

Does 980 SLI fit your budget?

Thanks for the answers guys, yeah for the DDR3, DDR4 I guess I wasn't paying enough attention when typing.

The idea behind the maximus motherboards was somewhat an aesthetic thing, that and I rather like Asus's EPU, software, interface etc

Also considering an asus front base, although if I was to go the gigabyte route it would probably be an aquaero going in the build.

Budget has really become to being whatever the build needs, I'm basing the rig on being able to run 1440p with highest possible detail / FPS, finding the best parts for its use and only then comparing prices.

I agree with you guys, Z79 is winner here, it's just convincing myself not to go for the brand new shiny thing, especially since going through the differences in features between Z79 and X99 I can't seem to find very much I would actually use.

(I'm not expecting to be using any more than two usb3 ports at a time, I wouldn't have any more than two or three SSDs and even then the only use is for faster loading times, my only concern now is just the PCI-E lanes as I can't seem to think of any other features X99 would be useful for in a pure gaming rig)
