290 to a 970?

It's generally one of those types of switches where you'll be happy for a month or so (assuming it didn't cost you much net) and then over time you'll wonder why you bothered to switch as there's no real difference.

almighty15 basically says whatever he has done and what card he currently has is the right thing to do so I wouldn't pay too much attention. Apparently his 780 was bested by his 290 and now his 970 is better than what his uber 290 was. Whereas in reality all three of those cards perform extremely close to each other (in games) winning some and losing others. Some people got to justify their own sidegrades though :/

+1

Ask Moogleys ;) He's forever swapping his cards

Surprised that the op is having issues with bf4 fps. On ultra x4 msaa @1920x1200 I see average fps in the high 80's on a single 780. 290 and 780 are pretty similar in this game, but mantle will allow much better minimums than a 780. My minimums on a 64 cq map can be in the mid-high 50's.

I went from a 290 to a 970 and i'm very glad I did. The main reason I did was because Nvidia cards seem to work better with a lot of Oculus Rift stuff. Also the 970 is amazingly quiet and my main rig doubles up as a HTPC so it was worth it for me. Having said that, I did it as soon as the 970 came out before the 290 prices dropped. I probably wouldn't do it now with the cost it would incur, it wouldn't be worth it.

Same res and same settings ( worse cpu 3570k )and average around 90fps, i am wondering if the op is using dx instead of mantle as its a little worse using dx on a 290 on bf4.

Figured out what you're gonna do with that upgrade itch yet? :D

Yes :D Custom Loop after Christmas :D really excited and looking forward to it

200 for what, a reference card?

Yes - With my case being micro ATX, I'll only use a reference card and to be honest, couldn't be happier. It's quiet and has fantastic performance at 1440p.

Id hazard a guess that is indeed under DX. I've seen figures posted up here by a few guys who run 290's and the DX figures are similar to mine. Mantle on the other hand has better minimums.

It is, but there's so little between the 290 and 290X, you wouldn't notice the difference anyway. I'd say the 970 is on average around 5% faster than a 290, maybe a tad more. Nothing in it really.

Not a bad guess.
Max oc vs max oc on Firestrike my 970 SLI setup is only 4.7% quicker than my old 290 crossfire setup :p

4790k stock
290 Vapor-x
Kingston HyperX 8gb 2400MHz
Gigabyte Z97X UD3H-BK
Superflower 850W
Windows 7 professional
Phanteks Enthoo Pro

I play BF4 at 1680x1050 on high settings since I struggle to get 40fps on ultra. While playing temperatures are for the gpu are around 70c.
