Cigar Aficionados

Let's see your humidors then. What do you have in your collection, anything particularly special? Do you have a favourite?

My collection is usually on the small side, 40 to 60, and ever-changing. It currently contains a Punch Churchill with an upcoming death sentence. I also quite like H. Upmann Magnum Especial, and the Cohiba Siglo IV's I was recently introduced to by means of a gift.

I like them moist. Humidity in my box is a desired 77%!

Yes, all of them except the bottom drawer can potentially be used for storage. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 are fairly full. I try not to use the top compartment, as it is furthest from the humidifier.

The bottom drawer contains the humidifier, hygrometer and thermometer.

77%! Has mould ever been a problem? I'm guessing you use a anti mould solution instead of distilled water?

Nice setup :)

We should organise an OcUK cigar meet :D

Yes, the C Gars humidification solution. I use it more heavily than they would consider normal, given it's meant for a range of 68-72%.

Cheers. It's a Hillwood that at the time normally cost £600, but I got it new from them for £125, via their auction account, due to a slight imperfection in the wood causing it to fail their exacting quality control process.

A cigar meet is a good idea, though it would be difficult to find a suitable venue that wouldn't kick up a fuss with its outside area being dominated by a cloud of cigar smoke...

I always remember smoking a cigar when i was younger and it was the nicest tobacco i have ever had. I know it wont be popular probably, im not a pro here .. but it was a fruit type (flavoured)

Is it the done thing to get flavoured cigars ? and what would you recommend. I like a light burn but with a sweet flavour

any ideas? thinking of getting one or two for new year celebrations

Agio Meharis are very sweet. Box of ten for about a fiver a few years ago, probably about eight quid now.

sickly sweet ? id like it to taste not just the aroma obviously. Also they look like tiny cigs.. i want a fat one lol

also what is the most flavoursome cigar you have ever had ..

I wouldn't say sickly sweet but then I quite like sweet things in general. I suspect the average smoker would consider them sickly sweet though. They are certainly the sweetest available as far as I know.

If you want a good-sized cigar, then it would be a case of finding a mild one rather than a sweet one. I've tried at least one largish vitola from each of the Cuban brands, and never encountered one I would describe as sweet.

Thanks. Sorry for the questions, im a noob at cigars..

more questions:

do you need a cutter for the end ?
is it better to light with a match ?
what’s the best way to put them out ( recommended tool )
do you just leave a partial smoked cigar in the ashtray ?
is whisky a good drink to have along side or is that just for show ? i.e would an Ale go ok

You can use scissors to cut the end if you want, or bite it like Hannibal from the A-team. A proper cutter just makes a tidier job of it. You just have to know you're not just whacking a great lump off the end, just removing the cap.
I prefer matches. Some prefer lighters.
I never put them out. I make time to smoke one completely.
I never leave a partial smoked one in the ashtray. As above, I make time to sit and smoke one completely.
Whiskey. Ale. Pick your poison. I usually have coffee. My brother has his with whiskey.

do you need a cutter for the end ? - a cutter or a pair of cigar scissors

is it better to light with a match ? - yes

what’s the best way to put them out ( recommended tool ) - stub them out when it gets so short you can no longer puff on them without burning your lips

do you just leave a partial smoked cigar in the ashtray ? - yes, if it's a proper cigar ashtray. A good quality cigar, properly kept, will not go out until the end. If you get clean white ash it's good, if you get dark greys it will probably go out several times.

is whisky a good drink to have along side or is that just for show ? i.e would an Ale go ok - it's down to personal preference. I prefer bourbon to scotch, but find both too powerful to accompany cigars. I prefer to drink cognac or rum (which depends on the cigar) which are both more mellow.

Thanks both of you. Now to work out where im going to be able to have the best place to have a smoke without rolled eyes or comments.

I feel sitting outside under the nights sky with a burn and a fine whisky would compliment nice .. i,e not just infront of a computer or hanging outside the back door.

the moment must be right :D

What's a nice cigar to try? Want to celebrate my upcoming payday with my GF and was thinking of getting a couple cigars and a nice bottle of whiskey (another debate in and off itself!).

There's a lovely cigar shop near me, but I just wanted a couple opinions first.

Depends on whether you want light, medium or full smokes and whether or not you're a regular smoker all ready. A Romeo Y Juliet of light or medium strength is usually good if you're not a regular smoker. Size depends on how long you plan to sit having a smoke. I'll buy different cigars of different "flavours" and sizes depending on what I'm drinking / doing and how much time I have to smoke. When I'm walking the dog for instance, I'll smoke something in Corona size (5 and a half inches) as it takes about 15 - 20 minutes to smoke, and my dog walking route takes about 30 - 35 minutes. If I have the time to sit and enjoy the weather (mostly in the summer) I'll go for something in Churchill size (7 inches).

Whenever I'm asked about which cigar a beginner should try I usually bounce back with a load of other questions such as how strong, what flavours do you like, how long should it be, etc...

However every time I smoke a Fonseca #1, I always think "this is a great cigar for a beginner". Seasoned smokers often dismiss it for it's mellow flavour, but I really think it in an under rated cigar and a perfect introduction to beginners.

Where do you guys buy your beads and things from?

My mother threw out my tupidor, and need to start again! However, the beads on eBay are pretty much all from the US or mad money.

I got mine direct from Heartfelt in the US, delivery took a couple of weeks. IMO better beads and cheaper than the reputable beads you can get here.
