Even though its an i7 that 2600k will hold back a high end card somewhat esp SLI.

I doubled my min FPS in many games going from a 5GHZ 2700k to a stock 4770k (crap clocker) with same GPU at that time which was a GTX 680 4GB.

Well I'm not going to bother with pointing out what is the faster card because i'm sure you know all that. I'll just give you the unbiased opinion of someone that owns both Nvidia and Amd gpu's.

If you had asked me this question 6 months ago then i would have said get the 290 , best bang for buck for a single gpu solution , but that includes all the headaches of owning an Amd card.

Now i would say the 970 is the card of the moment, its Nvidia so pretty much plug and play, no mucking about tweaking this and that.

For a duel card solution again Sli is so much better, its better supported and in all honesty Crossfire would give an asprin a headache.

the sensible thing to do is crossfire the 7970, but who am i to talk when ive orderd two of the most expensive 970's and i already have a decent 290 that plays everything i chuck at it

You sure? There are 2600k's that smoke my 4770k in 3DMark and such.

i know how your thinking, even now im not sure ive done the right thing but i thought about it so much i got on my own nerves so spent the money to forget about it, im sure i will be doing it all again when the 390x drops, i really should take up a cheaper hobby

Unless your min fps was like 1 or 2, I find that really hard to believe. Clock for clock, isn't Sandybridge roughly 20% slower than Haswell? So 5Ghz Sandy is more of a match against 3.5Ghz Haswell .. was it a stable overclock? Seems really strange is all.

I do not really care what you believe I have seen it twice for myself and so have many here and no the FPS were not single digits.

A 4770k runs at 3.9GHZ Turbo when under load.

This is all I am saying on matter.

There is a b grade 7990 on ocuk for 259.

Having said that, my last build was 7970/7990 trifire and I don't know if I'd wish that on my worst enemy...

I'm inclined to agree with you. Pretty sure my 2600k was holding back my two 290X's at 3440x1440.

Powercolor 290 PCS+

Because I don't get any more grief with AMD drivers than I get with Nvidia drivers.

And@£216, the free games are sell-able for at least £50, making £166 for a 290 incredible bfb bargain.

Talking out your butt, you provide no data or mentioning of what games and resolution you were playing at for a comparison. Either there was something wrong with your system or your operating system.

Here's a cpu bound game http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2013/06/01/intel-core-i7-4770k-cpu-review/6
at 1080p using would you believe it a 680,
And guess what a 4770k and 2600k at stock and overclocked doesn't show gains like you claim. Now as most games are gpu bound at 2560x1440 and above the difference in minimums between intel processors will be even smaller.
So I'm calling you out on your 5ghz 2700k that was holding back your 680, aswell as your claim that a 2600k will hold back a high end gpu.
