290x or GTX970 ?

So time for an upgrade... CPU will be an i7-4790K

Which GPU should I be looking at ?

I'm currently on a 2600k and a 7950.

I like the idea of going with G-Sync, but probably won't cos the cost of the LCD.

Gaming is done @ 1920 x 1200 and i absolutely hate any stutter.

R9 290/x if you want Mantle or GTX 970 if you want G-Sync maybe in the future. Me personally would probably go for a R9 290 but I would also consider another cheap HD 7950 until (if PSU is good enough) the next generation of cards.

r9 290x get free sync soon any way do g sync is pointless now but ill soon to own a 970 and ill review them back to back

Well if you can get a 290X for less than the cost of a 970, then go for it. Otherwise, probably better off with the 970. They are about even in performance. 290X has mantle support, the 970 has G-Sync (but you said you probably wont use that) and PhysX.

IMHO the Geforce Experience software seems a lot more polished than the Gaming Evolved thing too. I still don't know how to remove the advertisements in the game optimization window (the Recommended games).

290 will be cheaper, and you get mantle. Yes they run a bit hotter, use a bit more power. But hard to ignore at current pricing.
