970gtx or R9 290

Both good cards but I would go for the 970 because of nVidia's feature set.

DSR is a very nice addition and can make older games like HL2/Fallout 3 look very good, you then have ShadowPlay, which allows you to record your gameplay on the fly and even allows you to record the previous 20 minutes (handy if you did something good or something happened you want to see again). Next up is PhysX. I personally am a big fan of what it adds to games and it really does add to the depth and brings games like Batman/Borderlands/Metro LL/Metro 2033 and many many others to life.

On the other side, you have Mantle and that has the ability to give more frames per second over DX11 on AMD.

a lot of material out there. Cant find the exact article I read it one was a while back now but these are from Nvidia.

1 & 2.

The problem here is the waters ate quite muddy.

There is DX11.3 and DX12 in the works. The big difference, being that DX12 will provide low level access whilst 11.3 will offer the same features with out the low level access.

Here is a Microsoft blog.

No difference to how AMD demo DX12 at Game Dev conference.

The Key word here is Full Support.

Also here under specs

To be honest, we wont know for sure how much support till Microsoft release the full spec sheet.. But its safe to say both Nvidia and AMD are listing there latest GPU with DX12.

To answer some of the questions:

Early access for students: At this time we're focused on inviting developers with a track record of making games to help us make sure the API is awesome. Once the API is finalized, we will open it up to students/hobbyists.

What about other graphics card vendors: We're working very hard with NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD and do our best to give them all the same opportunities. Stay tuned, there will be more on this in the very near future

PC Games: Any announcement of PC Games will come from the makers of those games, we're just focused on making awesome graphics technology for everyone who wishes to write PC games

True. We wont know untill it launches. Thats why at first I wa a little bit weary of buying a 970, and thought it was wiser to wait for Win 10 to launch first.

DSR is a very nice feature.. Just to point out to OP AMD also Have Raptr for recording and does just the same as ShadowPlay.

The DSR function is what I like. BF4 at 1440p/120Hz is the sweet spot.

Is Raptr working ok now? Last I read was Humbug was having some issues recording with it and the sound was all messed up.

Why not just use the "res scale" option in bf4? iirc 200% is the same as 4k... Is performance better with DSR?

He could do that with BF4, or he could just set the res in GE for all games and then pick that like any normal resolution. Saves messing about with a slider and not having a clue what res is what.

No issues here with it. Seems to work perfectly fine.

ive recorded who rounds of bf4 with dsr on. it is very nice. also dont use shadowplay or rap use fraps or dxtory and set them up right.

Alright, so on air the 970 is probably gonna be faster and quieter at 1080p than a 290 on air. Beyond that res the 290 is faster but gonna do it louder and hotter, if you slap a waterblock on the 290 and overclock it its gonna be faster than a 970.

If you game at 1080p on air and just want a card to run your games just get the 970, if you're running higher resolutions (1440p and up) you might as well get the 290.

You've got Mantle and PhysX, both seem pretty obscure to be honest, only a few games here and there that have it and its not like they keep you from running certain games with this or that card.

About the throttling... People on here are oblivious about the "throttling" on Hawaii cards. Its user defined, and its called powertune. You choose a max temp and a max fan speed and the card will try to stay with in these parameters. If it cant run at full core clock stay quiet AND within your desired temps at the same time it has no choice but to lower clocks and throttle the voltages to stay stable. This is where custom coolers or water come in to play. Not to mention these cards scale nicely with lower load temps and they like a lot of voltage so...

Please dont listen to some of these people about 290s. They know next to nothing and have nothing to prove they know anything at all.

DSR BTW if you're gonna use that as an argument FOR Nvidia...

DSR is different name for SSAA. And nvidias stupid marketing saying it looks as good as 4k on a 1080p is flat out lying, idk who the **** would fall for that or even buy an nvidia card solely based on taht but whoever that is... Is an idiot...

I have a 290 and I'm considering a 970 Strix just because the fans don't spin when idle or light gaming --> cleaning dust in the heatsink less frequently (well, I don't have filters in my case...)
Performance-wise, they are both about the same it seems.

back from a weekend away and didn't expect so much chat.

Thanks to all for the comments.

One thing that has stood out for me from reading through is my power supply. At only 550W it seems that this automatically rules out going with the 290 as they seem to need a 600W or above from looking at the specs.

so the 970 it is, but I've learnt quite a few things about the differences between the cards and the new techs (last time I built a pc was 2004!).
