Return of the ZX Spectrum!

Some things are best left to memories. Try playing some of these games now and it'll hold all of 1min of your attention.

Exactly it's a good cause for a pile of drivel that will last you 10 minutes. I remember playing these games for hours and hours. I have been back and tried to play these games and given up the second I realised even if you complete the game halfway when you die you have to repeat all over.

I could do that when I was 7 not anymore. I played finders keepers for about 700 hours. If I could get 700 seconds out of it now I'd be amazed.

8 colours but only two on screen at any one time please - and one of them must be black :p

Actually, if my memory serves me right it was 2 colours per 8x8 square, a background set colour for the whole square and then the individual pixel colour. ;)

Game developers did an amazing job at the time putting multiple colours on the screen and avoiding colour clash.

I don't think I would buy this, as someone else said, it just looks like one of those cheap tv plug in emulators, its not what the spectrum used to be all about for me. Just looks and feels all wrong.

Same here.

First 1000 sold out now :D

I understand the point about the games being outdated, though I still say Manic Miner (first game I loved playing) is still a fantastic platformer (I've played the PC version recently). Yes there are other, cheaper options but I like the idea of owning properly licensed versions on a standalone device that will hopefully be somewhat portable.

That was quick! There just over 300 sold when this thread started. The goal has now been surpassed with £107,607 raised.

You can buy a genuine 80's Spectrum for £20 and a flash card addon to download games from.
Part of the nostalgia is the actual hardware I think.

It says

Q – Is the ZX Vega compatible with all the Spectrum games?

A – To the best of our knowledge the Vega should work with all games created for the original spectrum machines.

but with only four buttons, how exactly can you play text adventure games like Quest which require you to type full words? The on-screen keyboard sounds backwards.

So...

No keyboard? Not interested.

How can anyone play Skool Daze on a joypad with four buttons? Let's see what controls there were, shall we...

up, down, left, right
Shift to run
S for sit/stand
F for fire catapult
J or L for jump
H for hit
U for "yes I understand Einstein is going to grass me up"
W for write (which then necessitates numbers/letters to follow)...

This lot far surpasses the amount of buttons on the Vega already, and that's not even considering the additional functions in Back to Skool. And given those two are my favourite Spectrum games of all time.... I'm out too.

The Hobbit also required text input, which was actually my first thought on seeing this (even though I've never played)
It is however on that emulator that zico posted (and badass deleted???)
