Hey guys, be gentle I'm not great on sound.

Looking for some new cans and considering the Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO Headset - 80 OHM

I currently use a Sennheiser PC 363. Will the DT770 be much better?

I also use a Creative SoundBlaster z soundcard. USe is mainly gaming and some music/movies.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Because open backed headphones generally have a more expansive and airy sound stage and the positional cues are not drowned out by too much bass.

The large amount of bass that you hear with many closed back headphones is the result of the sound from the headphone speakers being boosted and added to by internal reflections from the closed cups. This can leave the bass sounding loud, which is great if you like that sort of thing but also boomy and quite indistinct at the same time, due to the different sound waves (main and reflected) arriving at your ear drums at slightly different times. With open backed headphones reflections are much reduced because most of the sound from the rear of the speakers goes out the back of the cups.

I see. Thank you for such a detailed explanation.

I did look at the DT990's that are similar price but open back, but I am concerned about my Creative Z having the capability to drive it?

The Z can drive the DT990 pro (250ohm) but falls a bit short on AKG K702/Q701 (62ohm) or HD600/HD650 (300ohm).

The DT770 actually have very good positional audio, it just gets drowned out by the somewhat emphasized bass.

Give this thread a read, he reviews headphones and rates them for gaming in both competitive and fun settings, it's pretty much the bible for headphones for gaming.

* If you want a headphone with plenty of bass don't just go by the ratings for competitive gaming because you'll end up with a bass-light sound. Heavy bass and accurate positional audio are pretty much mutually exclusive because the bass drowns out the subtle audio cues we use to pinpoint where a sound is coming from.

Bad luck :( It happens. I would put them up there with the best in terms of build though.

Cheers guys.

@Begbie - after how long mate?

About 2 years now, in all fairness I'm not sure if it's my fault or not.

I did re-solder the wires and test as much as possible to determine it was the driver though. They have been 'abused' though and have travelled half way across the world with me multiple times. Thrown in a kit bag and probably thrown onto the plane too - well most definetely.

Quite sad still, I loved them. I never properly drove mine either, and they were outstanding. I'm now tempted by the Q701 or the Phillips X1s.

Would the Asus Xonar DGX be enough for DT 770? I have the former at the minute but the Creative Soundblaster Z was on offer and was thinking of it.

Great stuff. Just waiting for mine to arrive with Royal Fail.

Thinking I might keep mine plugged into the dedicated headset amp port and then switch via the software then.

You can leave them plugged in all the time or do what I do, leave a short, good quality extension cable plugged in with the end permanently on the desk, which negates the need for rooting around behind the computer without leaving the headphones plugged in all the time.
