Noooooooo!!!!!

what method did you use to get the card in?

Bit of a mission, to be honest. Bought a Dremel (which is fine as I will definitely find other uses!), opened the case up, then rapidly discovered I would need to remove the MB and most of the components. Several reasons - the cutting created lots of sparks, I was a bit concerned about the metal dust even with everything covered, and (crucially) there wasn't room to get in and cut on anything close to the correct angle.

So unplugged everything, took the MB out, cut away a section of the drive bay (punctuated by my wife asking what the hell I was doing), cleared out the dust with an air duster, replaced the MB and plugged everything back in.

Now back up and running. Feel slightly pleased with myself, though the thought has occurred that building a new PC from scratch would actually have been less hassle than what I actually ended up doing!

thought it would have to had been the dremel route.

the things we do to get GPUs in to cases! lol, doesn't surprise me about the wife, they don't understand when it comes to PC's

my 970 turned up yesterday and the wife said "is that it" when I took it out of the box as it just cost £250 lol

You told her how much it actually was?!? My biggest fear is that I will die and my wife will sell my PC parts for the price I told her they cost... :D

see this is the issue with bank statements! I cant hide the cost or the huge amount that just came out the bank lol.

she doesn't mind but if I suddenly stop replying then you know she has salvaged my PC and sold off the parts!

Tell me about it. I bought a Zalman and a load of HDD cages. Needed a dremel to cut a load of tabs in the 5.25" bays out so the HDD cages would fit. It would have been less hassle to order a 16 or 20 bay rack unit and just build in that. But then I would have had to get a cabinet too. And after all the cutting it took me ages to clean the entire case out of dust and offcuts because I was paranoid I'd leave something behind that as soon as I powered the tower up would short and destroy everything. All turned out grand though.

that is very true! but im sure the hassle routes are a lot cheaper than building a whole new PC.

to be honest I just got my new card and didn't check the dimensions.......lets hope it fits otherwise I know what I will be doing at the weekend!

Hack that bad boy up. Unless you are emotionally attached to the case. Then get another and put the old one beside you in bed.

lol I have had my same case for 12 years! (I think) its a very old case and is the only thing left from what I first started building my own PC's.

as I do gradual upgrades I never have the money to do a full system build but I have a new case in mind which I will get at some point next year now as my 970 was for Christmas! lol

is this post its the first picture is is my case!

If I were you, I'd just buy the case now and save buying the rest of the components till it's more convenient. Transferring everything over and rebuilding shouldn't take too long, but I suppose it depends on how tidy you want your build to be in terms of cable management etc. I personally don't mind building PCs so it would be a no brainer for me.

I have a deep seated fear that I am going to break something while building a PC, which makes me reluctant. However, having been up to my elbows in the case most of yesterday evening, the fear has receded to the point that I'm starting to think I should do a new build sooner rather than later before it comes back.

I have to admit btw that I never checked the card dimensions. Which was remarkably stupid of me considering I have had the exact same thing happen before.

The advantage of doing it this way was that I got things up and running on the same day, without having to wait for new components to be delivered. I'm not a patient person...

Just take your time, make sure you're not in a rush and take a few pics beforehand if that makes it easier.
