Few Sunday questions:

So the X52 HOTAS setup - do you also need to hop over to a keyboard (or the mouse), during gameplay - I'm thinking when you dock at a station to trade etc. or is it all totally HOTAS - the immersion must be much better if you never need to use kb/m.

I've watched guys on Twitch giving voice commands for docking/lowering gear - is this built into the game already or is it some add-on someone has developed and is it worth using?

Head movement tracking -also seen this on a Twitch channel - gimmick or useful? would hate to sneeze during dogfight. Brings a whole new meaning to 'bogeys at 2 o'clock...

Is the save-game only in the cloud? I'm worried about corruption and losing everything - can you save locally as well - to at least have a backup?

Is there a base where you can store stuff or do you literally lose everything if you run into trouble i.e. all cargo stolen - 'cos that must suck

Can you end up with fleets of ships - all scurrying around on autopilot, mining stuff while you go off on missions at different locations with some form of remote control capability (I'm thinking similar to X-3 TC which was awesome)

Thanks for any responses - no need to itemise - just blurt out anything you know - looking forward to meeting you all soon and stealing all your luverly loot :)

Hoping Thargoid cream and anti-Tribble spray is cheap..

It being hosted on their servers or at home makes no difference, if they can't create a stable system of saving and storing states they messed up.
It's not as simple as storing a file on a server, parts of the player state is stored in various different places as a single database simply won't cut it at this kind of scale. Best thing you can do is ticket it - depending on the issue we can fix it by hand, or if you prefer to clear your save we take a snapshot of your previous state so we can look into it offline.

There obviously needs to be some of backup process... Can you image losing 100,000,000CR and having to start from nothing again!
We take regular backups of course... ideally we'd like to address the causes but I believe a way for us to simply restore a player's state is already in the works.

I think I've decided on this. Is it worth pre ordering? I really want to play a space game. I've tried EVE so many times but always end up lost in what to do.
I'll spare you my somewhat biased opinion, but if you pre-order you'll get a £5 discount off the post-release price and all the extras in the mercenary edition.

Edit: Oops, missed this page :).

Don't have one myself, but I'm pretty sure it's possible to navigate the menus with binds on the sticks. I doubt it'll be as easy as keyboard and mouse though.

Voice commands is done through a 3rd-party app called Voice Attack, just getting it set up myself and loving it already.

I don't often use headlook myself as I don't have a head tracker or a spare arm to control it, but it can be useful e.g. if you're tracking an opponent who has gone into silent running.

All saves are stored on our servers - offline saves are wide open to tampering which could screw up the background simulation of economies etc.. We know what we're doing regarding backups :p.

There's no station storage as such (apart from ships), if you get 'killed' you can pay a percentage of your ship's value to buy it back and continue from where you were last docked.

You can own multiple ships but at the moment only one can be in play at one time. There's talk of letting other players fly your other ships (and even take the co-pilots seat in the same ship) but it's not going to be in the initial release.

Thx Crowze - Just bought it online - accepting paypal is a nice touch. So before I download anything - is it worth plonking it onto an SSD? I'd need to buy a separate one as mine is full.. Was thinking of getting one anyway for Steam games.

Spare arm?!, use your head man!!! :-P

Ordered :p I just finished downloading the combat demo thing. I'll give it a shot later. I can't wait!

I think you've most likely downloaded the whole full client, but access to "proper" play is locked down.

I at first thought keyboard and mouse or a controller would be fine, but a HOTAS allows you frankly ridiculous control that I would not even think about going without now. There are just so many buttons, and when using some of them as shift buttons it's realistic to have effectively 16+ buttons, plus 4 different "modes" the hat button on the stick is in. Can't go back Bob.

Hardly ever. The only time I use my keyboard is when typing in chat (basically never) and in the galaxy map when typing in system names or pressing escape out of that menu. Everything else I use is bound to my Thrustmaster HOTAS. For menus this works by having a button throw the stick in to "UI Focus" mode, where you then flick the hat button left right or up depending on whether you wish to look at the left panel, right panel or chat/star port menu. Once a panel is selected I then use the hat on the stick to navigate the current menu, two buttons on my throttle to switch along tabs if necessary, and the trigger to make a selection.

I use mouse/kb for galaxy map and when docked, just find it quicker, x52 for everything else.

They are all next to each other on my 'command console' (plank of wood :D ) which sits on the arms of my 'commanders chair' (leather swivel reclining massage chair :D ).

Thrustmaster T-flight hotas-x + voice attack and a few things bound to keyboard.

Voice attack currently isn't set up fully but I'm able to do a few things such as:
Dropping/engaging FSD
Landing gear
cargo scoop
Boost if I'm lazy to press my button on stick
Lights, silent running, disable power
and many more!

However I don't use voice attack all the time, its just handy to have when you have too much to keep track of

One thing I would like is a working GOOD SLI profile for Elite, it supports SLI but it doesn't utilize it properly (bottom card is used more than top, very low GPU usage, less smooth) might have to have a play around with Nvidia inspector

Murah, do you use some of the buttons on the throttle as shift keys? Effectively doubles your available buttons.

I do yes, I have 3 shift variations but honestly I don't like having too much bound to the sticks I'm not fully used to them yet. I have all the essentials needed and the rest I take care of via keyboard or voice attack :) I have some things like hyperjump/FSD, boost and power distribution bound to stick AND voice attack I find it handy to have a few methods when in a frantic battle although I have taken to using the stick more and more since I like to play Elite via speakers and have some music on to go with it.

Protip: Turn up speakers and listen to the bass as you enter a station and power thrusters down, gets me going every time!

I use this setup I haven't gone near keyboard/mouse since I started playing in beta. I actually have too many binds at my disposal, that image is a little out of date as I've since made a "bodgebox" which is essentially a monitor stand with additional buttons etc on it.

An external program, only cost a few pounds and I've heard a lot of good things about it. There can be delay on commands though, but it's a superb alternative to buying an expensive HOTAS which you may not get value from.

It's not a gimmick, it's actually very, very good. Just like VR tech there are people who don't like it and want to **** it off for no real reason. Plenty of alternatives out there. I have a TrackIR5, but have tried facetrackNOIR, freetrack and opentrack. Only tried a couple with Elite: Dangerous specifically but settled in TrackIR5 as it was the least hassle to configure and I got one very cheap off the OCUK members market :) If I was looking for one now though personally I'd pick Edtracker. The only benefit TrackIR5 has over it is that you can use the trackclip so no trailing cables from your head, which annoys me about the trackclip pro (TrackIR) and Edtracker.

Love the trackIR been tempted recently to delve into it...

Had a random thought but is there a light device that could clip onto my glasses (On one of the arms) ?

Something is telling me I should buy a wireless mouse and kb if I want to take this seriously if playing on the sofa.

I use freetrack with a Yankee's 3 IR LED baseball cap, 2xAA battery pack on the back so no wires, paired with 120FPS PSEye, works sooper-dooper.

You can get clips but they tend to have cables which makes it fairly weighty, I'd recommend a trackclip or equivalent and a baseball cap, no wires = win in my book.

Agreed, the trackclip and a baseball cap works just as well as the track clip pro for me, might be a different story if you have a bright room or wear glasses though.

Bought myself an Asp tonight, from a more or less fully pimped Lakon T6 its a massive step backwards, im back to grinding to make the cash needed to fit it out to be on a par with the T6s range and cargo, but, ive found a lovely little route, 170k profit round trip with a short 5Mm within the same system. :)
