Coilwhine!! :(

I've never heard any whining from my 290X's or my SuperFlower 1300W PSU, I used to have a 290X with Elpida VRAM that had horrendous coil whine.

Although it seemed to be better when I had cards with Hynix VRAM which was a bit odd.

So even top end PSUs can whine? Jesus christ, Gibbo said putting better parts solved the problem on the Galax and his reference so why cant they just do that? Can i buy these parts myself to add to the card or is it really technical?

I know some 290s whine but its like 1/1000 while the 970 is more like 1/100 lol

Tbh he gets paid to lol, i agree with most of what he says but saying the 970 doesnt have major coilwhine problems is a blatant lie lol!! Everyone knows it does and so does Gibbo...

@shatpank81 because like ive said it has 2 year warranty and the small print actually says you need a premium gold rated PSU lol! So it isnt even any different...

Id pay the 50 extra if it was 3 year warranty and 100% coilwhine free! A****n is the only place that does next day replacement as far as im aware so my only choice is them if OCUK cant. Its a few weeks until xmas i really cant be leaving it last minute it will ruin the holidays for me :(

I like OCUK this has been my first return and only reason i have forum account, but a week to do a 10 min coilwhine test is pretty bad, i know theyre busy and a business but its still crap...

I'll see what they say Monday but fingers crossed all sorted before xmas! Its probably just my rotten luck and i got a mega bad card, hopefully!!

You could get the ref 970? That has a 3yr warranty with ocuk

Yeah i dont really like the ref, its also 320, has worse cooling and is louder, also less OC potential.

I never SLI or i would think about it, i think my next choice is the G1 or the Asus Strix. My last card was an Asus and it was solid!

I've had MSI Gaming 290x / MSI ref 780ti x 2 / Gigabyte 780ti Windforce / MSI Gaming 970 x 2 - All running on a Super Flower 1000w PSU and all had whine, some worse than others.

Probably 1/1 for coil whine on the 970 just varying degrees.

I didn't realize how much of a problem coil whine can be untill trying DA:I today, outside areas and the whine is really audible over the game sounds

You didnt return the card?!!? nowonder Gibbos return figures dont match up lol!

Theres no bloody way id put up with that sound xD

This has reinforced my opinion on the PSU thing, im not spending another £80 for a new PSU when the one i have is perfectly alright, until i got the 970 0 problems with this thing.

But wow man you have some bad luck!! I hope i dont get a run like that... You sure the PSU wasnt actually to blame in this case?

No, I had a Corsair RM750 PSU when I got the MSI 290x and Gigabyte Windforce and I got very loud, intrusive coil wine. I then swapped the PSU out with a brand new Superflower 1000w platinum (bought here) and the same coil whine was there, same volume (screeching). The other cards all had loud whine, and by loud I mean screeching in the actual games that I played and not just the in game menus or any bench marking programs.

So you were suckered into getting a "premium" PSU and it didnt fix anything?

Yeah that whine in the link is from Rome 2, i didnt even do any benchs or anything just tried games, i dont play benches i play games, if it whines its dodgy..

I just bloody hope i dont go down your path! What are you using atm? Im starting to wish i just kept hold of my old card and waited until the next gen now :(

I hope i dont get another whiner!!!

Running a CX750M psu myself with rig in sig, rarely whines unless FPS goes mental in a menu maybe I'm lucky?

Tell that to every manufacturer then......

It is quite rare on the grand scheme of things, but there are ways to reduce and try to eliminate it, yes it means spending more money on components, but it is possible.

Just unfortunately most manufacturers just see the $$$ signs and look to reduce cost of manufacturing to maximise profits.

How about you inform them of the % of returns based on coil whine??

Considering this is OCUK and the biggest Uk Retailer... Wont you have any clout?

Nope.

Manufacturer response is quite simply returns are well within tolerance and nothing unusual. Don't like our product, don't buy it as no one else seems to have issue. So all we can show them is well we've designed our own cards now, so if you loose market share because of that, do not say we did not warn you.......
But in fairness we cannot raise this as a major issue as return rates on 970 are no higher than they were on 770/780 for example, the only change is sales volumes are vastly higher...........

You have to remember how big they are and the fact is they can't build them fast enough. Asus sold out again, Gigabyte completely sold out and MSI are only just keeping up with demand but have shipped 100,000's of units in Europe alone.

So what OcUK does is go to companies we can influence and get cards built to our specification, we have done exactly that by building cards which don't have any kind of cost down and techniques implemented to try and prevent whine.

We've done more than any other etailor on this subject by miles! :)

Too many variables (psu, sound card etc....), and i dont want to pay the fees if it doesnt whine in their rigs.

Just adding to the "PSU + GPU Combo's" stuff

My friend (SerPlant on here actually) has the RM750 Corsair PSU and an MSI GTX 970 and he says his is perfectly fine...
Makes me chuckle considering all the bad stuff I've read people saying about the Corsair PSUs.

PSU guide posted!

Any chance of adding a direct link here? (just for ease of access) :)

Thanks for that!

See its all down to luck and mostly the card, i understand the PSU could help in some cases as they can suffer from whine too and the user cant tell if the whine is from the PSU or card so replacing the whining part fixes the problem.

But yeah theres no chance im forking out £80 quid for a part i just do not need! If it was needed then id happily do it but more and more people are coming back with no problems on Corsair PSUs...

Yeah i notice everywhere is selling out now! The Evga is OOS and not due in until the 12th now... So i doubt ill get a replacement until the 16th earliest? Can you comment on this Gibbo? Im still waiting for my webnote to be responded to, cheers.
