What he really means is Valve + Sony has stolen a lot of market share away from MS so the only way they can claw some of it back is to appeal to PC gamers again (good luck with that)

XB1 is a disaster. Win 8 is not far behind.

However, tying it to Windows 10 will not win them any new fans methinks as they obviously never learned from:

Vista
GFWL
Games For Windows Marketplace
DX10 Vista Only

MS need to buy Valve & Steam that is IMO the ONLY way they are going to make any progress in PC gaming but there is more chance of Gabe selling to Goggle than MS I cannot see him selling out he is already rich & does not need the money does he!

To be frank the best thing they could do is put their weight behind steam.

Any kind of gaming setup needs to be seamless, not add extra steps or complications to the end user, etc. GFWL for instance was an abomination that just added several needless steps to doing anything.

Not quite sure how Win 8 is a disaster, unless you mean sales wise? Win 8 as a OS though is pretty damn good, you can make it the same as win 7 if needed and it boots so much faster. It did have some issues when first launched but pretty sure it was all fixed, I have never seen an issue with it anyway.

I don't understand the hate for GFWL, it worked flawlessly for me? What were the issues with it?

Same, but some people said they could never login? Never happened to me though.

It was just not needed. Plus every game I tried to play that used it would inevitably prompt for new updates before I could play requiring multiple restarts of the client/game or occasionally windows, got between me and getting into the game having to go through several screens that provided nothing of benefit to me while being a mild irritation before getting to the main menu. Wasn't that infrequent the service would be unavailable or manage to lose my saved games, etc.

About 1 attempt in 5 it would have login issues for me - only recall 1-2 times where I couldn't get in at all (for a prolonged period) though but sometimes would take best part of 30 minutes (I'm guessing servers were busy or being DDOS'd).

GFWL for me was really good, it allowed me to msg all my friends who just so happen to be console owners :( So I could just press home and send a quick message. I also liked the achievements, although yeah Steam has them to. I wonder what could cause some users to not be able to login or have to try 2-3 times before they could. Could it be high pings? I really don't understand what could actually cause login issues for certain people. The way I see it, it works or it doesn't, unless the login server was down for the entire region.

Not sure but wasn't high pings - I was on ADSL2+ and then FTTC with <30ms pings. The impression I always got was that the service didn't have the capacity to handle the loads at busy times but it could be an ISP/peering specific issue (though I did try on both the BT main connection and eclipse backup).

Worked just great for me too, never had an issue with the 6 or 7 titles I played that used it.
I liked being able to message my xbl friends while playing on the pc.

Neither Xbox One or Windows 8 is a disaster so I'm not sure where you pulled that little gem from.

don't read anything into this twitter post. It's probably just the next iteration of DX for Windows 10 only. Move along.

It's nothing more than just a ploy to try and stop people complaining. Yet they are still paying off game devs to get Xbox exclusives. *cough* Tomb Raider *cough*

I had problems constantly with GFWL and always logging in. When it worked I had no issues and if they do bring another GFWL variant, I hope they learn from previous.

Steam is sweet, Origin is fine, Uplay is fine... Not much else to add really.

Translation - its time to push a new release of our OS onto all PC gamers.

What is wrong with them is that there is nothing right with them. They don't do anything. I have GTA IV on steam and GFWL does nothing but be another layer to log into and have running. For FC3:Blood dragon, Uplay opens when I run the game and closes when I have finished.

What is the point?

This seems related, a Microsoft Studios creative director recently set up a poll on the official Killer Instinct forums: What's your interest in a PC version of KI? Assume cross-play is supported.
I've played a lot of KI on XBone and it's great fun, if you're interested in the game you should sign up and show your interest!.

For those unaware, Phil Spencer is speaking at the Windows 10 event in January.

Maybe not much will come of it and it'll just be about Project Spark or something, but I think people should at least be a little optimistic as imo there is a lot of opportunity for MS and gaming on Windows.

It'll be interesting what they say, bit I doubt it'll be anything good.
Unless they are buying steam I'm not interested. Gfwl needs to completely. As do all the other game companies that have log ins and other authentication.
