Can someone who has played the game confirm whether it is essentially to have a flight stick.

I am thinking of pre ordering the game but current do not have a flight stick.

The original Elite game I played on my BBC micro was extremely easy to play, using keyboard only.

Has anyone tried the keyboard only and found it to be ok?

Thanks for any reply.

I have noticed quite a few people mention on the official forums that they play keyboard only and some who play k+m. Mainly some of the older players who are die hard to those controls. It is better on the sticks ofc (subjectively) but more than playable on other mediums so I have read/heard.

I'm am not a pro with a stick, having had mine less than a month, yet I physically couldn't do some of the manoeuvres I do during combat with only a keyboard and mouse. Make of that what you will.

Ffs comps died again, not sure if it's mobo or gfx. Once it on it's fine and works perfectly. And comes out of hibernation etc. It's only if I turn it off I get issues trying to get it alive again.
Sometimes it fails to turn on. Other time it appears to boot up but no signal output.

I really need a new build.

What's a good secondhand budget dpi and mobo. AMD 8 core or one off the older ivy bridge i5s. Can something be hand for about a £100 for both.

If there's nothing plugged into a gfx card, it should still show up on device manager shouldn't it.
As got it booted up on on board gfx, not that I can play anything on that. But it still took 4 attempts.

And gfx card isn't showing in device manager. Still doesn't help see if it's a gfx or mobo issue. I'm thinking mobo as it struggles to boot even on on board grx.

Any ideas or checks?

Those are the times I'm scheduled to stream Elite: Dangerous in aid of GamesAid as well as promoting Elite for Frontier. They're promoting the Community when streaming.
Tonight's stream lasted for 7 hours and apart from having to self-destruct my ship once (ran out of fuel like an idiot) it went rather well :D

Back streaming from 6pm tonight (Sunday).

No it is not essential I was playing for 2 weeks before I got a stick, that being said the Thrustmaster tflight hotas-x has made the game more immersive, it is harder to use at first I kept trying to move the stick like a mouse :D but practice and suddenly you feel like you're in the chair and you could almost reach out and touch space

I'm tempted by Elite, but not sure I want to go with the expense of a stick. Would a XBox controller work Okay? Gameplay wise is it similar style to XWing or closer to a full flight simulator in space?

I'm only using a cheap stick which happens to be very highly rated (Thrustmaster T.16000M) and can be had for under £30. Xbox controller will work fine but as to how good it will be I cannot say as it's very much personal preference.
I think it's more the latter, you can pretty much play whilst avoiding combat which I like as I suck at it.

As the game id half the price of AAA titles a cheap stick is not that much of a justification, problem with game is you will then want more:)

Over the past year have gone

Eyefinity which looks amazing (even with stretched sides)
Trackir 5 again unbelievable in this game (must be amazing on rift)
Rudder pedals (don't help much but adds to immersion)
X55 Hotas (a lot have peeps had issues with these) brilliant HOTAS setup
Tablet for ROCCAT power grid (which never use as all bindings on HOTAS) but it looks good

Finally my last buy from OCUK and extremely well built and comfy my

Arozzi Torretta gaming chair

A lot of peeps in reviews say these hard to assemble I can only they must have 2 left hands as its a breeze;)

I'm an early backer for this game - I believe I made my initial pledge on day 1 of the kickstarter and eventually settled after I'd pledged around £100.
Now I know I should have been testing and playing this game for months now, however other issues and commitments mean that I've only ever installed - never launched the game.

So, this afternoon I'll actually be hitting "Play" for the first time. Am I going to be totally overwhelmed by what I see on the screen - so much going on, not really sure what I'm doing etc.
Or is everything logical, will it be obvious what I need to do? Or does it send you on a "training run" first so you can get used to things?

I'm pleased to be in a situation where I can now put some serious gametime into this and with the official release being just days away I'd like to get in.

Cheers for any pointers.

You will probably be overwhelmed, even with the tutorials, but that is kind of the whole point of it for me. Learning how to effectively control the ship and turn a profit are achievements in themselves IMO.
