How do we allow the world to be like this?

How do we allow the Governments that supposedly look after us to be controlled by large businesses. The Governments are supposed to be looking after us, what's the point in having a democracy if it only applies to certain people with lots of money?

A good example is the food industry.

I have been watching a documentary called "Food, Inc." which explains how corrupt the American food industry is, with the Governments being regulated by the people who only have the industry's best interests at heart. Workers have no rights, animals have no rights and it is allowed to continue.

Similar things are happening in the telecommunications industry, with net neutrality and a massive amount of other industries too.

From what I understand it's not as bad in the UK but it still goes on.

How has it got this bad? How have our Governments allowed this to happen? Things need to change.

Money talks. Simply put I know but the ones whom have lots of money are in the best position to bargain with the government. Maybe even bribe officials.

Nothing will change.

Greed is good. I think you have a fair point but your never going to have a perfect world the best you can do is constantly reform.

I would imagine big business in America are a bit more powerful with regard to lobbying influence than British ones, could be wrong however, party depends who is in Government, the right wingers tend to favour the businesses more than the center or left wingers do for example.

You have a system where companies/peoples can make unlimited profit then you will find people willing to protect their profits, I suppose it becomes like a drug to them.

But can we really complain that much there are so many countries out there where you would find a very difficult life to say the least.

I have a pretty decent life and so do most people I know so things can't be as catastrophic as you make out. How have the things you mention upset you so much? Seems like a load of rant over nothing....

Welcome to Capitalism.

Personally I find capitalism is the stupidest thing ever - its like a dog chasing its tail - in the rush to enrich itself it destroys the very value of what its using to enrich itself :S if there are any other civilisations out there they must laugh at us for how stupid we are.

What a wonderfully broad outlook you have.

1000s of kids starve each day all over the world but My freinds and I shop at M&S so... :p

And this is precisely the issue with the world today. We're not directly involved in the system so we don't think about it.

As long as we're able to eat that's all that matters right? Well maybe to you but I've woken up and I think you should too.

Things will continue to be this way if we let them. But I am not going to.

OP is talking about our government/ US governent..... Yes, our government and society has faults but it's still one of the best all round in the world. Without being the way we are, we wouldn't have such good medical treatment, such advanced technology etc etc. if people that think it's so bad were to move to a non 'western' type country they would soon have their eyes opened and realise how they are ranting over nothing.

You're not going to let them? How exactly are you going to stop 'them?'

For the record I agree that some things could be improved. I just think things aren't all that bad! Being positive and all that!;)

Welcome to Capitalism.

While true, it applies to all forms of government where money exists. Under feudalism, for example, it was exactly the same: unless you were rich, no-one cared. Sometimes referred to as "The Golden Rule": he who has the gold makes the rules.
