Breaking News: Hostages taken in Sydney

It's pretty surreal here - everyone has been sent home in the CBD. Oddly though there doesn't seem to be a huge general response from the public - I personally think that it's a bit of a calm before the storm. If someone (i.e. hostage) is killed the response will not be pretty, especially if you bear resemblance to a follower of Islam. Aussies are not known for reasonable or rational responses to threats from outside of the country (read not white).

Honestly I'm surprised this has happened in Australia seeing as I've always thought of it being a fairly neutral country, kinda like Canada.
 
Honestly I don't personally see this as being part of a larger picture - they've chosen a place that is pretty public (right over the road from the Channel 7 Studios) but any camera coverage has since evaporated and the only people near it are heavily armed police. I would be very surprised if someone doesn't end up dead, not the least being the asshats that have done this but the opportunity for a well publicised and visual demonstration is long gone.

Nah - Aussies are very casually racist, especially if you're aboriginal or look very different to the western norm. It's something that they're trying to fix but small town backwater Aus is thoroughly redneck.

They're racist to everyone. When my brother initially went out to Aus he had a hell of a time trying to find places to rent because they didn't want to rent to "pikies". He's Northern Irish, ergo British, but they didn't care because he had an "Irish" accent and was from Ireland and they're absolutely clueless that there's a border between the North and South.

Then when him and his Kiwi wife were hunting for places to live, she basically told him not to come along because land lords and estate agents heard the accent and the deal would quickly go out the window.

I've had many emails from him about how ingrained and in your face the racism is in Australia. Doesn't even need to be backwater Aus to be ignorantly racist. He told me in one email that the guys in his office were complaining about all the dirty immigrants coming over trying to take peoples jobs and he says "lads, I'm a ****ing economic migrant...." to which the response was "but you're alright you 'integrate'".

Why hopefully? There's utter ***** in every religion doesn't mean every follower is the same.

I hope this is resolved without any deaths. Well the hostage taker I could easily get over but no more.

I imagine their "handler" further up the chain will have the phone number for the detonator in cause they chicken out.
