There's going to be 5 of us for xmas day, 4 adults and a child. Only I've no real idea what size turkey I should be ordering.

We'll all eat a fair bit on the day, plus it's always nice to have coldcuts and enough for a pie after Boxing Day.

What size bird are you guys going for?

10-12 lbs would be about right I think - I cooked one towards the upper end (think it was about 11.5) and between 6 of us there was plenty left over.

Also as a benefit most online recipes use a bird this size so you don't need to modify times or anything :p

I ordered one (you have to as they don't have them round here) and I've just been told they got me a 3.85kg bird rather than a 5kg one I ordered. There are 8 adults!! Although it's not the only meat we're having, it's bloody ridiculous!

I'd love to do goose one xmas.

The wife's just been to the butchers & the smallest he does is around the 4.5kg/10lb mark, which should do the job nicely.

You could probably do 8 if you aren't big eaters, assuming you can get 8lb turkeys (never bought one less than 10lbs myself)

10 would be a safe bet, can't beat cold turkey, I never get tired of it! :D

Unless you really want the giant bird presentation I'd probably spatchcock and cook 2 x 10lb turkeys instead - much more manageable!

If you had to go with one turkey say 14-16lbs? Normally budget around a pound per person to include leftovers but I'm assuming all 12 people won't be around for leftovers so you don't need a giant beast bird. :p

Having various meat this year but generally we used to get a turkey crown for about £11 from asda or somit. Did enough for about 4 adults. Hot the crown cos most didn't like legs or wings just the breast parts. So saved on waste.

Thanks for the advice. Was thinking 2 but oven space will be limited.. Might get the In laws to do one before coming over.

Madness the legs and wings are the best bits! Me and my dad end up fighting over them and leave everyone else to the boring breast meat.
