My friend has been severely tempted to get a gaming PC, especially since I recently upgraded, but doesn't want to put in quite as much as I have.

I'm confident I'll be able to put it together without any issues after how well mine has (apparently) gone. The budget is just for a PC, the rest he'll get outside of the budget.

Also, he definitely earns enough to have a fluctuation on the budget, so if it pulls over by a bit - if it's worth it - he'll be happy to spend, although being his first gaming PC he doesn't want to go overboard! :)

Dat case..

Other than that, top build :D

The Z97 board will take an unlocked i5 or i7 in the future and overclock so future upgrades sorted :)
and then the rest is pretty much the same as stulid's AMD one up there
Does assume Win8.1 is outside the budget though

Edit: or with OS and no SSD

containing an i5-4690K but not an Intel build? That'd be interesting!!

I tried to make one, but it's much worse as you run out of budget for the graphics card, much worse machine in the end so I binned it :( can use lower spec CPU but it's just a slower machine in the end. I'd not even think about dropping the SSD personally. Then again, I'd also want to add a better cooler to the 8320 or 6300 builds, so can run it cool & quiet at a decent overclock.

Yeah thanks guys a *good few* recommendations here - I'll relay it to him, see what base components he wants (Yes/No to SSD sort of 'questions') or if he can stretch the budget to say £800, although I know he needs full peripherals (KB/Mouse/Mat/Headset + Monitor) so he's putting in a strong fund as is already... unless he's thinking of gaming on his 32" TV lol

*wrong way round originally :p*

Yeaah ideally he'd want a new monitor as gaming on TVs isn't the best experience ever
I think you could pick up a nice enough headset for ~£40, kb/mouse for £30 and monitor for £100

Halve the SSD on that build to free up another £40 or so and get an R9 290. Would potentially need a slightly better PSU though.

That 550W PSU will power a R9 290.

In fact Linus Tech Tips recent video,

At 4 mins in says a gaming now PC based on a FX6300 and a fast GFX card would be great.

That's good (potentially costly) information. Have that PSU sitting in my PC. Wonder if 290 prices will fall any further...

Or a FX6300 build at £800ish the PSU would allow for SLI on a later date, not sure if that board is SLI capable though, if anyone else does?
