The massive, most glaring difference between American gun ownership and the Swiss model is that in Switzerland you get the gun as part of the national service, and military training.
In the States there is AFAIK zero requirement for anyone to have had any form of even the most basic training before they're able to legally buy a gun, and quite often even if they do have training it might only be a few hours.
Given most armed forces really really don't like people accidentally discharging their weapons and shooting their squad mates (or worse their superior officers), they tend to emphasise the safe handling of firearms.
