I've just seen this on the BBC news, a stockbroker has been sacked for tweeting "Think I just hit a cyclist. But I'm late for work so had to drive off lol".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-30700872

But his employer Hargreaves Lansdown said the tweet was "unacceptable" and confirmed his dismissal.

A spokesman for the Bristol-based stockbrokers said one of its employees "failed to conduct themselves to the standards we expect of our staff".
"Upon becoming aware of this issue we have terminated this person's employment with immediate effect," he added

Even the guy himself, Rayhan Qadar, says "Anyone who follows me on Twitter know 99% of the things I tweet is nonsense”

This has all hallmarks of the case involving the chap who "threatened" to blow up Robin Hill Airport a couple of years ago, who eventually won the case against him.

I know that some (most?;)) of the humour here would leave Frankie Boyle red-faced, but surely this is a massive over-reaction by his employer? Utterly bizarre, and, I suspect, a very large unfair dismissal payment coming Mr Qadar's way.

I imagine his contract like many others will have a section about maintaining the reputation of the employer online and in the real world, theyre just getting in before the media and public onslaught. And rightly so, the guy is a moron (speaking as someone who had a slapped wrist for a tongue in cheek comment on Facebook) .

This. You would imagine employer would make sure dismissing him would be pretty water tight.

Clearly deserves to be sacked I think. I don't really understand how people can be so stupid to announce stuff like this on twitter

You represent your place of work 24/7/365 days of the year. Do something stupid and it can look bad on the company.

Gross misconduct.

If you're going to post lots of rubbish on social media don't do it in your real name.

This has been all over the Bristol post today. People post worse things each and every day, I think it's just unfortunate for the lad that his got picked up on.

As for his Twitter name of 'Rap Yew' - yeah, that's a bit silly!

The sacking - a little harsh but a business is a business.

I have a friend on FB and he/she constantly slates their place of work to the point where i am sure their manager and co-workers must be aware.
Its quite a high profile company. I cant imagine they want their employees to say such things about clients/users/customers.

The problem for him is that stockbrokers, investment bankers etc. are held in such high esteem by the UK public that they can't afford to allow anyone to sully their saintly reputations.

This is why you restrict your account to only those you hand pick to see your tweets.

I write daft things all the time that could be taken out of context but it's not an issue if you don't have do-gooders following you.

I would have thought a stern talking-to would be more appropriate.

That said, we don't know all the ins and outs. He may have not been there long and still on probation. He could have been on a last warning already. As usual there are likely some key facts missing.

A stern talking to, does not get rid of the media.
As with every contract you can't show the company in a bad light. Which he most certainly has, they have to distance themselfs from him as much as possible.

He lost all credibility, the tweet showed incredibly poor judgement his employers had no option other than to sack him imho.

Well in that case pay me for 365/24/7

The guy was a moron banker but still he didn't mention his employer

I'm surprised he got sacked by HL. Do they think that because one of their employees posted a joke tweet I'm going to close my SIPP?

On the other hand, maybe he's the person who cannot sort out my multiple direct debit SIPP contributions, in which case, good job.

I personally think it's a bit harsh.

Exactly.

This is what I don't understand - the comment made no mention of his employer, he even put "lol" at the end and admits that most of what he tweets is rubbish (I admit I don't use/need Twitter and cannot verify this!). So even with a clause in his contract, I don't see how his employers will have a leg to stand on if the guy pushes for unfair dismissal?
