Why hasn't Japan banned child-porn comics?

Oh dear...

We all know who that person is, but never directly associate them. :(
There is nothing wrong with him liking what he does either, I think some of his posts are funny. :p

The way I see it, different cultures, different views.
As Paul said earlier, there is no reason not to accept why people like it and all that kind of stuff. I personally think, as long as the people who like it don't go all extremist and actually start doing it for real, there is no problem.

The dodgy stuff the article talks about is porn/hentai. The (vast majority) of the stuff which is licensed for release outside Japan is not porn and is main stream sci-fi/action/comedy/etc. You probably get more eroticism in an episode of Game of Thrones than whole series of a lot of animes.

I think there is also an issue of applying overly sexual characteristics to characters who appear very young, but whose age is never learnt. Like, for example, massive boobs on characters who (from what we can discern) are barely in puberty. The appeal of obviously idealised sexual characteristics is obvious to anyone that way inclined. And, while it is fairly obvious that the age of these characters is ambiguous at best, it's not necessarily unsurprising to achieve sexual arousal from overly prominent sexual characteristics.

this is very true, I bet a lot of people don't even realise that. I believe people should watch anime before writing it ALL off as porn lol
 
To be fair, I'm not sure what the difference is to women dressed up as schoolgirls in pron, or our pop music industry in which young girls (sometimes under 18) are dressed as adults & act in an overly sexualised manner, or adults pretending to be school girls (Brittany Spears video for example).

The difference is we are utterly blind to the things we do in our culture as were used to it.

I'm not sure anyone actually has suggested all anime is porn, have they?

After all, I'm sure we've all seen Akira, or Ghost in the Shell, or a Ghibli, or..... Pokemon....

And it seems the anime crew is just sidetracking the debate away from what the OP was talking about. Which was the more extreme end of things, as well as the middling stuff with over-sexualised young-ish girls.

I find those figures extremely tacky, however a lot of people are seemingly assuming that they're depicting children, and I'm not really sure why. There doesn't seem to be anything about the character that suggests it's a child.

It just looks like a tasteless over sexualised cartoon character. Are you assuming it's a child BECAUSE it's a cartoon character?

Shirley judging a person's character based on their interests is silly? I quite like all the Jap anime stuff. It's part of their heritage, you take one look and instantly know, without a shadow of a doubt, that it's Japanese.

Doesn't make me a kiddy fiddler does it?

But what about that character says school uniform? That's very decidedly NOT a school uniform, and for any one that thinks it is, they can't possibly be remembering school too well. It looks like a skimpy sailor outfit.

Well there's that too. I think part of it is the simplicity in the character design. People see simply drawn faces and assume a child. That they're seeing with their feelings rather than with their brain.

thats a girls school uniform in japan, sailor outfit. The dress they actually wear is bigger I believe, but yeah, its a school uniform
