yep i got this horrible virus last night and its everywhere, i cant delete it, PITA!

these days is it really worth trying to remove it all with a dozen programs? or shall i just do a clean install of windows?

i was thinking of doing a system restore to about 2 days ago, but ive heard this virus can still live through a restore?

ive never done a format before, had my pc 1 year, its my 1st pc, what steps do i need to take to save my stuff then, my HDD's are all internal so id need to back everything all onto one of the internals, then would i have to unplug the drive ive backed up to when i re install windows so it does not get formatted? i cant believe this

but surely the stuff im backing up, the virus could still be in there then just transferred back after the format couldnt it?

Consider using Hiren's CD (or as a USB) boot to it and use the anti virus applications etc to clean up your drive. Tutorials can be searched for on the web.

If that fails get dirty and format for a clean install. You could place your documents etc on a stick for backup, or another drive.

im not going to waste my time trying to remove this terrible virus. just going to re install windows, just need to make sure i got all i want saved, i know im going to miss somethings :(

and i wish it was that easy, ive got over 3tb of data :( so i have to back up on one of my internal HDD's

Not sure why you bothered to ask then if you had already decided not to waste your time, it would have saved other people's time offering help to remove the virus.
I have successfully cleaned up many hundreds of malware and viruses from people laptops etc without the need to wipe, although that is always an option if it should fail.
The virus, unless you have a dodgy file etc on another drive from where it was introduced, will often be on the Window partition only. It is unlikely to be on all of your drives.

Good luck.

sorry vimes i did not mean to offend anyone, just im going with mrbells 1st post "format. allways" and thats what im thinking too.... just to make sure

thanks :)

You can use Macrium Reflect to create an image of the entire drive.

You should have a backup copy of the image, stored on at least two drives for peace of mind.

....and maybe that will work out well for you, the formatting etc. But each time that you get a virus or malware the most appropriate action isn't going to be a format of your entire OS, along with all of the customisations etc which apply.

From what I understand TornTV isn't even a virus, in its native form, but an application addon which can be installed from clicking when watching online TV shows etc, residing on your PC and also in your browser as an addon / extension. There are several links returned from a Google search on how to remove it. There is even a Youtube video showing you how to remove it.

As you have never done a format before and it is your first PC it might be just a little heavy handed to consider a full format without having a read on removing this.

If you go down the format route ensure that you have your licence key for activation and any drivers etc you might need for whatever version of Windows you have installed. For example Windows 7 for me will not have my LAN drivers and thus can't get online to install them.

Again the best of luck.

New year resolution? :p

You can be the most careful person in the world but you can still get infected. As long as you know how to restore you should be fine.

You live and learn.

indeed we live and learn! ive learnt not to be a cheap skate and try to download a free game! im not even playing games on the pc any more! strictly processing only pc from now on

Playing games isn't the problem it's downloading cracks free movies, applications e.t.c... People trying to get things for free that causes the problem as sites install unwanted things on the PC.

so ture! but the thing is i didnt even click download, just clicked on the file to read its description and comments and it downloaded it self :( but for sure, a lesson learnt
