Did anyone here swap out a 290 for 970?

Just wondering if anyone here made that upgrade as I'm really torn. I know the performance increase isn't massive but the fact more and more games are coming out with a Nvidia partnership it's getting harder not to jump into the green corner.

I own a 780 and would not buy a 970 as an 'upgrade' and if I had a 290 I would not upgrade to a 970 either purely on the fact that even though nvidia have sponsored games and they might run a bit better than a 290 I really don't see the point.

Like you said though if you just feel like getting a 970 then why not, As long as your not expecting any more than a few fps difference.

Out of interest what games??

Witcher 3 is the only one that stands out for me..

And the increase you speak of isn't really an increase some games favour each card so you will never get a worth while increase..

tbh it really isnt worth it so unless they is a game coming out with exclusive nvidia features you wont to try..

i went from a 290 to 970 sli, if not for power draw i would have just went crossfire, but no its not worth swapping a 290 for a 970 theres just not enough difference

I've had both, and it isn't really an upgrade at all.
Though if you have a reference card it might be worth it just for the noise.

290 to 970 wouldn't be worth the time it took to get it, Good card but the performance increase would be minuscule.
Either wait for AMD's next card or just Crossifre the 290, I doubt there will be a HUGE increase in performance when the 3xx series lands either.

I went from a R9 290X reference to the GALAX HOF GTX 970. Main reason is because of the graphics card's colour to suit my build. Don't see much of a difference in gaming. But noticeable quieter and a lot cooler.

I moved from a 1250Mhz water cooled 290 to a water cooled GTX970 and it was well worth the upgrade.

Drivers are better, DSR is awesome and PhysX is nice bonus.

It's also faster too :)

Moving from a 290X to a GTX 970 purely for lower power draw. Keeping the 290X and 780 as backup cards.

Unless you can get a like for like switch I wouldn’t bother mate.

You may feel you are missing out in game works titles which I think is highly unlikely now, but what are you going to feel like when a mantle enabled game comes out and you miss out on the performance gain?

Switch it back?

It's impossible to win. Enjoy the 290, until it struggles then upgrade it!

I went from a 290 to SLI OcUK reference 970s.

One or 2 problems with my sound card not being detected afterwards and also flickering on Dragon Age Inquisition but other than that it's a lot cooler even with 2 cards in my system than just having 1 Sapphire Tri X 290.

However, I do feel that with 1 card my 290 had more grunt than a single 970. I think that had more to do with mantle titles than anything else though and I don't regret moving.
