Last night I was merrily shooting down various ships that were locally clean but wanted in other sectors (Anarchy system) and had accumulated a tidy little profit. A lot of the locals were starting to show up as red, so I figured one more score and I'd be on my way.

An Asp shows up and was worth a few bob, so I thought I might as well have a pop at him. I was in Cobra, so he had me outgunned, but I figured my human doggedness against his NPC stupidity would win the day.

Little did I figure that the Type 7 he was shooting at (and I was avoiding) would ram me (twice!) and kill me!

So a couple of hundred K in bounties up in smoke, plus another couple of hundred for the insurance claim. Pity, as that particular Cobra and I had been through a lot together. I know the new one will be identical, but it won't actually be the same (if you know what I mean).

I've finally decided to bite the bullet and have a go at a combat mission. I have a Black Ops mission to kill a rogue general. I'm in the system he's meant to be in, no sign of him yet, but I found some military plans floating in space.

Is this relevant or something else? Is it worth picking them up anyway? Or will I get in trouble for having them?

If you get scanned with them onboard you will get in trouble, best bet is to dock at a platform that has a black market and sell them... unless you get lucky and there is a mission on the bulletin board that requires them :)

Target the white thing that appears on your scanner, as you would an enemy.

Hit "deploy cargo scoop" - Home button by default I think.

You'll get a little oblong scanner screen where your target information usually sits. It has a crosshairs setup.

Fly SLOWLY towards the item, gently correcting your aim whilst also keeping an eye on your closing distance.

When you're close, STOP. Nudge the final few metres with either gentle throttle or forward thrust.

It'll scoop automatically. Don't forget to retract your scoop before speeding on out of Dodge!

See, I did all that. But maybe what I thought was what I wanted wasn't what I thought it was.... if that makes sense.

I had the thing in front of me, deployed the scoop, but didn't see any crosshairs.

Maybe am just being a bit dim,...

UGH!!! Well that could have gone a lot better!

I found the Generals ship. He threatened me the second I targeted him. But when I fired on him I got a bounty of 200 credits! We fought for a while, which was pretty tough as my beam lasers and multi-cannons did a lot less damage to his Federal Dropship than I would have hoped for. And he got in a lot of good hits on me. But I was gradually pecking him to death.

But then the Federal security forces showed up and started attacking me as well! I had 3 ships on me at once! Amazingly I managed to destroy the Generals ship, but by then my own ship was a smoking wreck and they destroyed me before I could try to supercruise away. I got the kill and the promotion, but I did have to rebuy my ship :(

Going forward, what did I do wrong? I was sent to kill the guy, why did I end up with a bounty for doing that? Is there a way to start combat without that happening?

And why did I suck so bad at combat? I have 2 class 1E fixed beam lasers and 2 class 1G multicannons. Is it just a case of upgrading to better class weapons?

You shot him first. If you'd let him start the fight security would have jumped in on your side, never shoot somebody who doesn't show as wanted as you will become wanted yourself immediately, unless you are in an anarchy system at which point it's a free for all with no rules.

So if I had waited he would have started attacking me first? Doh!

Oh well. An expensive lesson, but at least I got the kill. Is there anything I can do about that 200 credits bounty on me? I know if its not much, but I don't wanna have to look over my shoulder all the time on trade runs in case a bounty hunter comes after me...

You have to let your scanner (bottom left) finish scanning and wait for it to say "Wanted" to avoid gaining a bounty.

Also depends on what ship you are in, thrusters (to avoid certain guns), shields (higher is better), chaff (to avoid turret / gimbal fire), point defence (to avoid missiles) etc. :)

How well upgraded is the rest of your ship? A rated modules vs the stock ones is a massive difference.

You can clear the bounty by paying it off at a station/output aligned with the faction who you have the bounty with. NOTE if you get scanned whilst the bounty is active you will become hostile to the scanner, and if its a station you are going to die. Its much better to clear bounties at outposts (ie, those stations you dont have to fly through a letterbox to enter) as they generally do not scan your ship on approach.

Can I ask, what was the mission reward? Trying to ascertain the difference between the Anaconda missions and the Fed Dropship missions :p

To be honest, none of my parts are grade A. Nearly all my internal stuff is class 4, between E and C.

How did I find out where the bounty is? I'm back in the system where I did the kill and the local security office has nothing for me to pay.

The reward is a promotion to Petty Officer.

Might try again tonight. Or may just spend the evening on my ipad reading over a manual I downloaded...

Or may just pick up some kind of 'find and kill' mission. That might be easier/more rewarding

One thing I find very frustrating is trying to find ships and fittings. Trying to find a Cobra in Empire space and having no luck. Grrrrr.

Sell up for a hauler, outfit for max FSD range, then jump to Founders World in 10 minutes with your spangly 25LY+ jump range.

Question if they are not wanted, but the warrant scanner shows they have a bounty. Is it ok to attack them or do you get a fine for that.

Sorry for my noob question.

Sorry for my noob question.

A kill warrant scan will show you the combined bounty for that target across all systems, however the authorities in the system you are currently in do not care about bounties elsewhere! Unless you are in an anarchy system, you will become wanted if you shoot any ship that is "Clean", regardless of their bounties in other systems.
