Car Spinning/Skidding

What tyres are they? Some cheaper tyres really are useless in the wet on corners and roundabouts.
I've had some scares when I've had poor tyres in the past and only ever buy well regarded rubber these days for that very reason.

That said, and i hate to sound sexist bit many women I know seem to have very little awareness of how to drive in damp or greasy conditions, merrily throwing the car around as of it was running slicks on a well maintained and dry racetrack.

I bought cheep rubber once. It split :( Never buy cheap rubber

I have been with her in the car before, but not long after she had passed so perhaps she has got into some bad habits. But, she was a generally good driver, even for a girl!

I don't think the car has ABS, as I am not insured to drive it (not covered by my own policy 3rd part, as I am under 25) I cannot go and have a go. I'll have to be a passenger if I get a chance tomorrow.

The front brakes were changed at the last service. She has Michelins on the front and Khumos on the back. I cannot check the size, as she is at work.

If I have read your posts correctly the Michelins were put on late last year, with the rears being a budget brand with low tread ?

This is almost certainly going to be the main cause for the rear stepping out as the front of the car has more grip than the rear. I would put a matching set of Michelins on the rear and get the alignment checked.

As others have said, probably tyres. My girlfriend had some plastic Chinese ones on her Ka (her dad got them because they were cheaper ) and had to go ridiculously slow around corners or else the car would just carry one straight ahead. Similarly I once bought a car "fitted with brand new tyres on the rear!11!", which turned out to be Wanlis, and it was an absolute deathtrap.

Where the hell are you driving!? Honestly, next to never encounter it - as above the rare occasion it happens it causes chaos not one random car to spin
Rotherham.

High numbers of haulage firms operate from here. I am not exaggerating when I say I see at least one diesel slick in my 25 mile round trip when I go to uni.

I'm pretty sure it will have ABS, the net says it does. :)

Just a quick Google myself, not being my car and I'm not sure where it's manual is residing either. I have only driven the car a couple of times, and that was a couple of years ago when I had no alternative and short term insurance.

Correct. I have also roughly worked out how old they are, so they will be getting changed; just got to book it in with my tyre guy tomorrow.

Had the same thing with some cheap nasties on the GF's Aygo. She was driving to me just after passing and managed to hit a kurb and knacker two tyres and buckle a wheel. Her Dad "new someone" who whacked on some cheap nasty things. She complained that it didn't feel the same so I took it to my tyre guy, got him to swap out the tyres and match the pairs up and do an alignment; much better.

Thanks all for your replies. I'm going to change the tyres, get the car aligned and also get a general inspection on the car just for peace of mind.

Drive it yourself and have a feel!

First guesses would be tyres (pressure/tread/cheap), alignment, worn dampers, bad brake bias. Then simply too fast and/or inexperienced for the conditions.

Might be worth giving her a skip pan voucher for her next birthday?
