2.1 set advice

Yea I only went for a new STXII 7.1 due to the requirement of the 7.1 features for my speakers.

But I did pick up a 2nd hand STX later (no original box) very very luckily for just £40. It is now in my mom's PC, where she's using with a dirt cheap £12 2.1 speakers...such a crime! :D But to be honest, even that cheap set of speakers sound a lot better in terms of clarity! :p

STX at £40 used with £12 set of speakers. Are you satan?
That is a bloody good deal.

Could always use a DAC instead of a soundcard via USB
True, but I doubt OP would be able to find a decent one that would be as cheap as 2nd hand STX and it wouldn't have the soundcard features to use.

I got a Cambridge Audio DacMagicXS which I picked up from Richer Sounds on Black Friday for just under £50 (usually at £99.98) and is currently using with my one of headphones.

They are great for music, but for gaming and movies, I'd still use my STX II.

STX for gaming and movies every time and to be honest for music an STX will give entry level external Amps & DACs a very good run too.

Damm, finding one of these cards 2nd hand at a good price is like finding chickens teeth. In fact, chicks teeth may prove easier :(

your card @ £40 was an absolute steal :p

it sure does (for most of us) some poeple have been unlucky with interference but not many.

It was. But it was just a bare card I forgot to mention.

So if you find one in good condition with all the box and everything around £70 is still pretty good. Don't use my £40 example as reference. It wasn't the norm at all...I was just lucky :D

Indeed you was, very lucky :)

At min having difficulty finding one much below retail. Will carry on looking... :)

Finally managed to find one, new on the bay for £70, should be delivered next week :)

Will post what I think of difference compared to my current card once I have it :)

Finally got round to installing the STX tonight, and fired up a few tracks from ltj bukem in flac quality. Have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised at the difference in sound quality. It made the music come alive much more, it now sounds like, this is what music was intended to sound like :)

Much kudos for the recommendation, many thanks :)

Its on a par with the Epiphany O2Di or the Schiit Modi & Magni stack, so quite a bargain for £70 :)

In the Windows Playback Devices manager change it so that it can use up to 24bit bit depth and 96kHz or 192kHz sample rate, it should allow the card to run optimally.
