Sky to Block your favourite sites by default...

So why not let parents show some initiative and have them turn on the blocks if they want them rather than just impose them on everyone else? Or is that too common sense?

We had hedge-porn back when I was a kid and videotapes that were copies of copies of copies of copies and as such were so poor quality that it was difficult to discern where the bush ended and the artefacts began, it never did us any harm.

This is just another flimsy and cynical excuse for the Nanny state and her Big Brother to get their feet in the door.
 
I love it when people who have no idea make massive sweeping decisions about things they know little to nothing about. They're just testing the water to see how people react then they'll start blocking things that say things about the Govt, etc. Freedom of speech is only accepted when you're saying things that the masses want to hear. /tinhat

Do we need a filter like this? Surely there are worse things going on than kids watching porn? Maybe I'm out of touch.
 
why not just ask the customer on ordering sky broadband if they have children. if they do recommend that they have the filter enabled, but they can request to not have it.

problem solved.
 
I don't mind this from a purely porn perspective because I rarely if ever watch it, so I am sure I can do without, what I'm concerned about is how wide-reaching this block will be. Could it lead to Twitter being blocked because some users upload topless/naked pictures for example? Could it lead to websites like GQ and Esquire being banned because they feature lingerie and covered nudes? I want to know the scope of the censorship.

Also, aren't people just going to use proxies to get around this? It wouldn't be difficult, I'm sure there are loads of kids out there who know how they work.

If you want to know the scope have look at China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia etc.

This is the thin end of the wedge it's the start to protect government from its citizens and its citizens from questionable morals
 
There is a larger picture to take into account here. What about all the poor folk (me) who rent rooms in professional house shares where the live-out landlord pays for the internet etc. HOW CAN I ASK MY LANDLORD TO TURN ON THE PR0N AGAIN?!! AWKWARD!!!
 
If sky broadband users object to this censorship it's quite simple - you need to cancel and move your broadband to another supplier and make sure Sky know why you've moved your custom. It's a pain but it's the only thing they are likely to react to.

A newspaper editor said something similar when being harangued for papparzi practices - is essence his answer was if people refused to buy papers even for a week when we do this we'd stop over night.
 
This is exactly why I stayed away from big ISPs. Obvious targets for mass censorship.

And to protect the children? Honestly this mollycoddling is beyond pathetic. Or is that what I'm supposed to believe and there's an ulterior motive (probably the more likely).
 
As for how to get around it, you can always get a VPN account or use Tor. Some might say that everyone should have some sort of obfuscation when browsing anyway.
 
I have thinking of moving for a while now in fact since Sky bought Be just never got around to it. This has prompted me to get my finger out.
