Windows 10 upgrade free for owners of Windows 7 and 8.1

Fresh news from Microsoft's painfully aspirational Windows 10 briefing. Owners of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 will be eligible for a free upgrade to Microsoft's upcoming OS. The free upgrade will be available throughout the first year of Windows 10's life.
That's a pretty big deal—Microsoft no doubt realises that people are hanging on happily to Windows 7, but the chance of a free upgrade could prove tempting. For PC gamers, it'll mean free access to DirectX 12, which won't be supported by Windows 7.
We'll have more from the briefing as it happens. For the most part, it's just a series of people saying "devices" in different degrees of sincerity and urgency.

Mantlephobics will be delighted.:p

Wow - nice one M$ ;)

I wasn't expecting that!

Although free for the first year can be read two ways, is it free upgrade only for the first year or is the upgrade free for the first year then goes to a subscription model for instance? I know MS would love everyone to have to subscribe to their OS..

Meh who cares if it's free. Im going to see what PC gamers think of it before I leave win 7 for gaming reasons and if the desktop is back to normal with 0 metro rubbish on as tiles just takes up screen space and is a stupid idea for a desktop environment. Might be OK for mobile or tablet but not PC desktop usage.

Also they say win 7 isn't getting dx12? AFAIK it was as ms said it was awhile ago. So unless they say I'm gona keep to the thought that it is.

Nice gesture on MS's behalf.

Won't be getting it on release, will wait 4 - 6 months to see if any major bugs / flaws show up first and give Asus a chance to get some table drivers out.

its not so much a "nice gesture" more a sign of how the market is changing, expect the store & bing to play a bigger role

personally i dont mind bing, early days tho i guess :) it could turn horrible fast

Whats the rough estimated release date?

The other question is, lets say in the first year you download and install Win 10 (upgrading from Win 8.1).

In year two or three, you need to do a format.... then what? You need to pay for it?

nice now i have a use for that wim 8
got it as an upgrade to a vista system
bought a laptop that came with win 8 hated it so much i never upgraded the vista machine
guess i could upgrade the vista system with the win 8 and then to win 10
and see how it works out if i like it i can also upgrade the laptop

Excellent, though, this is a really good point.

its possible they could try it but i think they would lose too much market share attempting that, i think more likely they are going full free or very close to free then hitting you with the store and bing

that stuff is working well for other OS
