Are you a seat belt offender?

I have to, or suffer the enormously annoying whining that my car inflicts on me until I do.

Especially annoying as it kicks in almost instantly after setting off... Not sure if it's the fact that it happens in the morning when I'm more miserable than usual, but it's extremely frustrating to the point where I don't ever want another car that does it, ever.

Despite that, I do wear my seatbelt even on short trips. I see no reason not to. In a way I'm sort of glad my car moans like a **** because it means I don't have to when my passengers opt not to wear theirs.

Always do.

My father had an accident year ago, tboned right on the drivers door by a big old citreon estate. He was told in no uncertain terms that, had he have been wearing a seatbelt, it would have killed him. I've got the photos from the accident somewhere, steering wheel was right over the other side of the car. Was a miracle he survived that at all.

Always wear one.

Question though, if its cold and you have a coat on do you put the seat belt over the coat, or do you undo the coat and then place it over the belt?

I do. However an old boss of mine doesn't.

He had an accident when he was younger which he would have been killed had he been wearing a seatbelt. But on that occasion he was thrown from the car and escaped unhurt.

Thats his reasoning anyhow

And it's a 1 in a million sitation.
Any police officer will tell you that they have "never unbuckled a corpse" - sure, plenty die after an accident when they wearing a seatbelt, but it would ahve been instant if they hadn't been wearing one.

My girlfriends family have a thing for not bothering to wear one, the amount of times they have seen a police car & I've seen one of them say "Police Car!" and then one of them pulls their belt over their chest so it looks like it is on is ridiculous.

The GF also constantly drives off with no belt on & then puts it on with no hands on the wheel whilst driving is pretty annoying, I've started not closing the car door until it is on.

I'm half tempted to wire a relay between the ignition & the seatbelt light so her car won't start when the light is on.

Or if you are making frequent deliveries not further than 50 yards between your last ;)

Think you will find that is metres :p

You don’t need to wear a seat belt if you’re:

a driver who is reversing, or supervising a learner driver who is reversing
in a vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue services
a passenger in a trade vehicle and you’re investigating a fault
driving a goods vehicle on deliveries that is travelling no more than 50 metres between stops
a licensed taxi driver who is ‘plying for hire’ or carrying passengers

Always wear it, and it's normally the very first thing I do after getting in a car.

I have one friend who doesn't wear his seatbelt (and even went to the trouble of disconnecting the sensor & bing bonger) simply because he doesn't like being told what to do. Mentalist.

Never wear one at night, seatbelt warning sound only lasts about a minute but always wear one during the day just in case I get my collar felt.

He would have been in 2 pieces.

It's the first thing I do when I get in the car, regardless as a driver or passenger.

I have friends who I have to remind on occasion, even though the car pings at them to do it. "We are only going down the road" was an excuse I heard.....

Always.

I am shocked by the amount of female drivers I deal with who wear it, but improperly. Chest strap behind back and lap strap over lap only. Or lap strap over lap and chest strap under their right arm.

Can you imagine how much that is going to hurt in an accident! Broken ribs, compression on waist area...internal ruptures, punctures and bleeding for all!

I have only witnessed ONE incident where wearing the seatbelt would have likely killed the driver. The problem is:

- It was a very old car. Probably early 1990s.
- The entire driver's side was crushed into the passenger area
- He has life changing irreversible brain and body damage

He survived, but he wont ever walk, talk or do anything but sit in a chair again.

I actually feel weird like I'm not in the seat properly without my seatbelt on. That, and my car literally screams at me if I drive off without it on.

Wat. I'm shocked you know anyone that does this. Do you associate with a lot of window lickers or something?

It even sounds like an effort to wear one like that over how they should.
