Be careful when buying personal number plates *UPDATE 28/1/15*

UPDATE

This morning he transferred the plate to her car

I believe without her knowledge :p

Slightly related: a well-off friend of mine has just bought three private plates for her three daughters. None of them are old enough to drive yet (10, 13 and 15). Mutual friends have commented on it negatively - it is not something I'd ever do, but is it really that bad?

Perhaps I should have made this a thread in Motors.

Depends if they still get on with each other when they are old enough to drive, not all siblings want to look like identical.
It's not so bad for women, it still counts as 'cute', but for a bloke to drive around with one is still the saddest thing ever. Attention seeking in men is just not very manly.

Speaking of bad plates...there is a Audi in Reading that has "IM A" as it's reg

I keep expecting to see naughty words in the muck when I see it.

My parents bought me a private plate a notable birthday a few years back. I really hated the idea and resented the moment I transferred it. But now I've had it for a few years, I've gotten used to it. It's nice knowing I'll always have the same plate, and kind of nice hiding how old the car is (though it's not old).

I don't think it's that bad. It's something they'll keep forever (as long as their driving).

My dad had an opportunity to buy a personal numberplate years ago which was our surname.
I think it would have cost around £3,000, it's now worth £15,000 :(

Would you ever have wanted to sell it though :p? Also, do you have to pay capital gains tax on number plates...?

Interesting to get another point of view. I thought that it might impact negatively on them, at first - perhaps they might be perceived as entitled rich girls by some.
